I use a Veritas 7'6 MH with 20 pound mono. Yeah, not typically what people use. The heaviest one i throw has 4 heads that are 1/4 oz and a 1/2 oz long wire with a basstrix swimbait. The 4 shorts are usually havoc or zoom baits. It has 4 small willow leaf blades. I can get it down deep by letting it sink and reeling slow. From there i only go lighter by using bait keepers with no weight on the 2 top baits. I'll switch to 1/16 oz on the other 2. Middle usually stays 1/2 oz but I will change to 1/4 if I'm going really shallow... and no blades.
i fell for the heavy rod and braided line crap when i first started throwing it. I watched guys in the PAA and Opens on Douglas breaking them off on the cast losing a lot of money. They couldn't throw them much over 20 yards. With the mono, MH rod and lighter bait I can throw it 35 to 40 yards pretty easily. I've never tried to sling it to the moon, just a regular overhead or sidearm cast.
I do have a buddy that throws a 17 bait rig. He throws it on a heavy rod and braid. Thats no for me.
