You will be getting a package from TWRA with alot of information in it. At least they did that in the past.

I've hunted it twice. Circle around to the backside away from the levy. Look for heavy trails running the length and then look for big buck sign, not just buck sign. Set up along those trails near sign and plan to hunt all day. Get ready for a lot of action if you have good weather. I look forward to getting a follow up report.

Bailey, how many points did you have to get drawn for Ensley? Always see folks talking about the main island but not the Ensley unit.
Good luck and kee us updated when the hunt rolls around!

where can a person get a map layout of ensley? where does the hunters park?
I hunted it in 2008 and it was very dry. My understanding was it's better to hunt when there's water to help funnel them a little better. You will receive a map in the mail and you can park anywhere around the levy.

I had 8 points, I was drawed in 04 and we hunted two days, but with all the rain had the bottom flooded out and pushed deer out. I finally gave up and went duck hunting Sunday. Two were shot on Sunday but neither recovered. My friend who hunted with me had a monster 8 come in right at dark one afternoon. All I saw were does which is my luck lol.

I work near there and saw the biggest deer I have ever seen about two weeks ago a few miles down the road.

That's what I did back in 04 but water had them pushed out. Hopefully we will have better weather this year.

Thanks

I haven't hunted it, but being familiar with the area and having deer hunted a good bit of bottomland, my advice is to keep your scouting Day short and tight. Pre scout it the best you can and try to go in with a very specific game plan. Obviously that may change because of sign and other hunters, but don't blow the area out. There's also a good bit and subtle art of randomness to hunting bottomland. You expect the deer will be traveling the edges of the water because that makes sense, but those bottomland deer will walk, wade and swim with no thought or hesitation. Often times, the best looking, highest percentage, most obvious spots yield absolutely nothing when in the bottoms.
