Engine over heated light comes on

Bought a boat with plans to put a new 4 stroke on it. But since I haven't sold my Tracker I may have to use this one for awhile. It's a Evinrude 115. It starts perfect and has the biggest pee stream I've ever seen on a boat. But after 5 minutes of running the over heated light comes on and after about 1 minute at slow idle speed it goes off. Someone told me to take the thermostat out and all it did was make the boat idle rough and again after 5 minutes the overheated light came on again. Then went off. Any ideas

I'd pull the heads and see what the water jacket around the cylinders looks like.

I had a 75hp Mariner that the alarm would go off occasionally, the alarm was in the control box under the throttle it turned out to be a bare wire in the controls shorting out setting off the alarm.

When I bought my boat they told me if that happened, take the thermostat out and clean it real good and put it back in.

Is the pee stream hot?

Replace the impeller regardless of the pee stream.

Ended up selling the motor and buying new mercury 115 4 stroke. Problem solved lol
