What do you think would cause this deer to look so poor? She runs with another doe of similar age and a yearling. I noticed pictures of her from the summer where her ribs were showing, and over a few months time she appears to be worse and worse. She seems to get around fine and is eating just like the other deer, but even her coat looks gray and worn compared to the others. Middle of sumner county. Photo is from a feeder down in my front yard, these are like pets in a protected area from hunting.

Sure looks like CWD, but it could be any number of other things. Only way to know for sure is to put her down and have her tested.

Could be anything...CWD included, but based on the time line you mention, I would think she would already be dead by now if she was symptomatic in the summer.

Could be cancer, EHD, another disease, injury, could just be old as heck and fixing to die anyway. No telling unless she is tested.

I've heard corn has no nutritional value for deer, more like candy. Is this true?

I don't believe it has much value as far as protein for the deer but more as a source of carbs for energy. I can tell you that the deer I've shot while hunting around corn fields typically have had a higher, more visible fat content than those I've shot while around other food sources.

Funny from looking at a pic some folks have immediately declared "CWD". There are other diseases that kill deer besides CWD.

She looks sick but I would wonder if she might just be real old and dying.... probably sick though

now that CWD has been found in the state, everyone just assumes that's what a deer has when it's sick. I see it on facebook all the time
