I was invited to hunt some private property in CO this Oct, 2nd rifle season.. :super:

It will be 8k acres with just 3 of us (plus the trespassers) Its real close to the San Jaun mountains, but this property is not in the rugged area. Highest place is prob only 8,000 ft..

The owner said elk only really come down good in 3rd rifle season, but i'm hoping for some early snow to push them on down :pray:
 
I hunted second rifle last year near Crawford and everything was up at 10,000 ft plus. Like Poser said, days were high 60's and low 70's so they were still way up.

That being said, I will go back every year I can just for the experience. Seeing and killing an elk would just be the icing on the cake. Hope you have a great time.
 
One year it was 75 and the next it snowed 3 feet and froze beer in the cooler. This was in NW Colorado between Meeker/Craig east of the highway.

The elk moved down quick that cold year, I got my 5x5 on day 3.

I've been in that area before. I stayed in Durango, Colorado when I was out there. That's a really nice area. We saw a lot of Mule deer, but only a few elk. But there is some good elk hunting in that area. Hope you all have a good time!
 
I've hunted in San Juan in unit 77. Most of the elk may be high but it changed from year to year. There will always be some low elk just maybe not in big numbers until the snows come. Good luck
 
how did the hunt go? doesn't look like there was enough snow to really push the animals down to lower altitudes, but hopefully you guys were successful!
 
We had a blast, and were extremely lucky ! The land owners had not seen many, only a few cows. Since it was so hot & dry, we hunted the few water holes. I killed opening day, my other two partners killed Sun eve & Mon eve. It was a blast.

Right after I shot, I had a mountain lion come towards me, then sat 30 yards from me and watched me for a few mins. It scared me 1/2 to death !



The elk was 700 lbs +. I'm 6'0 for a height reference.

daytime temps running mid to upper 70's.. unbelievably warm.. water was the key
