Elk load

Experienced hunters please . If you are going to Co. elk hunting . Planning to use 270 WSM , which cartridge would you use ? Commercial loads , hand loading out of the question .

Something that uses Accubonds or TTSXs. I hand load, but trust those bullets and know that they are available in factory fodder. If your rifle doesn't like those then try GMXs or Federal's new premium bullet.

No need in skimping on your ammo. One of the cheapest parts of the hunt, but the only part that will touch the game while it's still alive.

I'm not a .270 man, but I would stick to accubonds. I shoot the factory 180's out of a 300 win at every west of the Mississippi. I really like the 190's but they are to hard to get in factory fodder. Good luck!

I've Elk hunted 20 plus yrs. out west. I have always done great with nosler partitions. I shoot 160 grain in my 7 mm mag. Death on an elk. I liked the federal Premiums in factory, but hand load mainly.

I'd pick a load that you shoot really well.

I used a 7 mag with 163 ELDX last year and was very impressed. Bull turned 180 degrees, then got droopy and started sliding downhill. I wouldn't want to take a raking shot or intentionally shoulder shoot one with a bullet that frangible though...for those type shots I'd rather have an accubond, partition, or similar.

This is the best advice. .270wsm will do the job with a well-placed shot to the vitals.

Yup accubond are my second choice, as I use partitions. I would think somewhere around 130 grains for that caliber

Elk hide is mighty thick. I smacked a NW Colorado 5x5 at @ 100 or so with a 180 partition and I could see Wyoming through the hole. I would pick a Federal 140/150 gr partition load.
