YEP they should have rode in 10 or 12 miles and camp instead of staying in the cabin and only going in couple of miles each day. You have to go up in the high country where the Elk are .

Depends on snow or no snow. The snow forces everything down into low country , you guys are high enough at 9,000 for early season yep.

I remember one early gun hunt there came a blizzard up from BA HA Mexico back in 1989 I think and it was a Hurricane that hit on the West coast and came up the mountain range dumping huge amounts of snow and it started snowing 8 inches in the first night and kept coming hour after hour. We headed down to low country and town of Carbondale Co. when we started seeing the Pennsylvania and New York guys coming down from up higher dragging there tents and gear . There were some cowboys that rode up looking for their lost cattle and I had heard them over in the next valley so told them and the owner and his men rode that way trying to get them down to low country before they starved and froze to death in the snow. A lady went missing in her Jeep headed home from her family , they found her in the Jeep froze the next Spring. Snow is what decides.
