Elk have moved back and forth from Cataloochee to Tennessee for several years. One bull visited Cosby regularly for a few years. A small bull was captured in Jefferson Co in Jan of 2011. A collared cow was killed near the Waterville Exit on I-40 this spring. TWRA gets reports of elk in Cocke County regularly. Usually the Park comes and gets them.
The problem is that an elk by itself can't reproduce so they keep sending them back to where the herd is. I have friends in Cosby and they say they have sent the same bull back to NC several times. They are going to try and send the bull to a different herd this time from what I understand in hopes that he will stick with a new herd this time. Maybe the females will be a little prettier in the new herd.
