I was able to finally score a double on elk this year. A big (700) cow and a good representative 2 1/2 yr 6x5 public land elk this year outside Craig CO. (Hamilton). Very lucky to do it as we had a small snow the day before opening day which lasted for 2 days. Then a pretty good 10 inch snow the 2nd to last day. Got the cow up high at last light 2nd day, then the bull at 4:05 the last afternoon.
No exaggeration, she had a solid 2 inch layer of fat all over, he had zero. Bull also had 16 inches of arrow with broad head in his left tenderloin touching his spine FULLY healed.
Shot both with 300 Win. Mag. With 165 grain Federal Premium, neither one took a single step. I shot the cow high, bullet hit her shoulder blade and went into her spine and exited out opposite side, she was 220 yards. I had a very nice 115 yd quartering away shot on bull.
Only saw 4 legal bulls, missed one twice at 520 yds, had to many cows between us and 2 legal bulls still looking and messing with cows. And killed the last one.
Total saw close to 125 elk, a ton of spikes and rag horns, many calves and cows.
Great trip, just wanted to share for those who chase these beautiful creatures up and down the mountain side.

Awesome! I believe your cow weighed more than any TN bull killed.
