I just ordered the ole smokey electric smoker. It had the best reviews of all the ones I could find. I am charcoal man and I know electric smokers are sacrilege, but with my schedule I don't have time for charcoal most days. My question- this smoker has a tray for wood chips to generate smoke anf I have no idea where to get them. Thought about just using some of my firewood split into small pieces, but don't want burn my deck down
 
Walmart, ACE, Lowes, Home Depot all carry wood chips.

And in my opinion soaking doesnt do anything but waste your time. You have people argue for both ways, but I've never seen an increase in smoke times by soaking.


Electric Smokers are hard to keep the temps up to where they need to be. Let us know how it goes and show some pictures of your cooks!
 
i have heard that they can be tricky. this one has a temp that goes up to 400F and a temp gauged thermostat so i am hoping it works out. i didnt see any chips at our local walmart but will check out lowes and hd
 
You may need to shield it from the wind or get some kind of insulation to wrap around it during cold windy weather.

I have burned up two electric smokers. I love them. I also found wet sawdust beat the heck out of chips if you live near a sawmill, get by the bucketfull. Most meat stops taking on smoke after two hours.
 
Ive had two as well. Next one I get is going to be a masterbuilt. They are all easy to learn. Just remember low and slow. I usually cook mine for a long time real low then kick the heat up at the end to ge the crisp.
 
i bought it and have used it twice. did ribs and wings. incredible. so so easy. set and forget. love it
