Can other animals ( not moose or elk) contact ehd?

Dogs,cats,coyotes & fox even goats in some cases all drink from the same mud holes don't they?
Why would it not effect any other animal but deer species?

Is it something too do with the elongated nasal cavity?

Don't think so. EHD infects some cervids by way of a biting fly called a midge.

I don't know if any other species can carry the disease while not being sick. As far as I know, only deer become sick from the disease. We humans can be bitten by disease-carrying midges, but it has no effect on us.

It is my understanding that the midge enters thru the nasal cavity effecting the brain..
Causing high fever and eventually death.
Is this not correct?

Why would that not occur with

EHD is blood-born viral disease. Midge bites deer, virus is transmitted through saliva to the deer's blood stream.

Many diseases are very species specific. The target species is highly susceptible, while the virus has no effect on other species.

Yes. Similarly dogs bitten by mosquitoes carrying heartworms can die from heartworms but deer bitten by the same mosquitoes don't have the same problems. People also can be bitten by ehd carrying midges or heartworm carrying mosquitoes and don't have issues, although I read that people bitten by mosquitoes carrying heartworms can have small nodules develop in their lungs.

And I'd venture to say bucks are MUCH more susceptible to it because of their exposed growing antlers. That's a much easier meal (bite) for a midge than trying to get through hide. Face is fairly exposed, but imagine having an extra 100+" of target on your head
