Found 3 dead so far. 2 near water and one on the way to water. This is northern Perry county right on the Buffalo. Any body else seeing anything that looks like EHD/blue tongue?
 
We're still recovering too, coming back good actually, so this will suck. I'm going up this afternoon and will be looking around for more dead ones, but hopefully won't find any. When we had the last episode of this we found about 20 or so dead ones across the property and I'm sure there were some we missed.
 
It does happen every year to some extent....some years more than others and some less. Though the big outbreaks occur every several years (5-7) I believe
 
I have been watching two diff. sets of buzzards
I bet there are dead deer down by the river
If I had time before work I would take a little hike.

I will tomorrow before work,sure hope we do not get a heavy dose again

I'll have to check with my clients that own land right on the Perry-Humphreys County line at the Buffalo River.
 
Brian, let me know what you find out. I will check my property in Pery County as well. I hope we don't have it again to bad. Just started to get a rebound.
 
surely not, if so-it's an isolated pocket, a spatial anomaly

generally the return interval would be around 6 years for severe widespread outbreak

In 2007 EHDV Serotype1 (New Jersey Strain), the exceptionally virulent strain did cover most of the counties around that area of West Tennessee, including Perry.

My data from TWRA showed Perry as one of the >30% mortality rate counties.(my data was a snapshot sometime around the October-November timeframe)It was obviously updated after the season was over.

Interestingly enough, depending where at in Perry you're located, your adjoining county to the south Wayne only reported a <15% mortality rate. You could have been somewhere in there.

But then with Wayne, that could have been a statistical reporting anomaly.





edit: that being said, the SCWDS does show West Tn in a zone of that which is inside a 3 year return interval, actually looks like Perry has the demarkation line running through it. South of there, into Ms and Al, is the area of "Moderate Antibodies/Mild to Severe disease "

As opposed to further north and into Middle Tn where the return interval is more along the lines of 6-10 years with a "Low Antibody/High Mortality" zone

What is the report,Im right there in Lobelville,I did see 1 buzzard today,but smelled,or saw nothing
 
This is most likely a "mild" year. I've only heard 3 reports all summer (Hardeman, Haywood, and McNairy) until this post. Then I got a call from Decatur Co. yesterday.

Last year I had about 3times as many calls but all were McNairy county west to Tipton/Shelby. I submitted 2 samples and got positives back from McNairy and Tipton counties.

If someone finds a freshly dead or still alive sick deer please contact the Region 1 office so I can get it tested to confirm EHD.

In the big picture, I don't see this as impacting the population at this point. However I realize that's not much consolation if your loosing deer on your hunting spot.
 
Well, went and checked out the rest of the place and all the likely spots had no dead deer or signs of dead deer. Appears to be just a freak situation. What's strange is that all three deer were within 100 yds of the house. Two of the deer were 20yds apart and the third, a yearling spike, was next to the chicken coop not 50yds from the house. We'll keep a look out but hopefully this is all we see. This is just outside Lobelville.
 
We found one 9 point on the farm I hunt Tuesday,the yotes were already at it and the buzzards were have their way to. Bummer.
 
Yep, i had friend whose grandpa owned land in cheatham county and he told me he went from seeing deer and killing them every year to seeing almost nothing! not even does!....that was a terrible outbreak.
