In order to improve the deer population and the quality of the hunt for everyone, Fort Campbell has made a decision to require all deer hunters to �Earn A Buck� by taking one antlerless deer prior to harvesting a buck. As a management effort, this requirement will go into effect with the start of the season on September 20. Harvesting a buck prior to taking a doe, will result in a permanent suspension of post hunting privileges. I don't know much about the fort but I have a few friends that tried that on a 3000 acre lease. They killed a bunch of does and a few years down the road they have no deer.Lease is in unit L btw.

I'm pretty much just neutral on Ft. Campbell's decision to do this, as with an entire season available to hunt, most hunters will have ample opportunity to safely harvest a doe in short order, while still looking forward to most of their annual hunting opportunity.

What Ft. Campbell is doing is very different than the very unsafe "earn-a-buck" deals on some weekend quota hunts, where the hunters are required to kill a doe (before a buck) on the same weekend, and then maybe not be drawn again to gun hunt that area for years.

They did this in WI for a couple years and increased the doe limits. The population has crashed. I wouldn't recommend it for an every year kind of thing. Every other year should be the most it's used for population control.

I can't recall ever reading about a successful earn a buck program. It sounds great in theory, but over time it causes an over harvest of does.

That would seem the more logical thing to do.
Simple, too.

Don't know about you, but I despise complicated rules that tend to reward the dishonest, such as when there are not effective mechanisms in place to enforce those stated rules.

And I suspect half or more the bucks killed on the Cross Creek guns hunts have been illegally harvested without an antlerless deer really taken first?

Just because someone "checked in" an antlerless deer via their smart phone does not equate to their actually having killed an antlerless deer.

At least Ft. Campbell is in a much better position to enforce their rules.

You can take 3 in the gun zones.Problem is most guys won't shoot a doe .Now it's gonna be those guys crying because they have to shoot a doe.

........ and there are plenty of guys who kill their limit and would love the opportunity to put more in the freezer..... Anybody who has hunted the fort very much knows the whole place is NOT over ran with deer but the areas that are, are seldom open...

yep i pass does when at the fort(get all i need at the house).but i also rarely see does,last year i saw 3 does.and i hunt up there alot(excluding halloween through thanksgiving wich im usually on my lease in illinois).saw somewhere around 12 bucks.but not going to complane just do what i have to do and move on,just have to change my hunting style around alittle

The intent of this rule is to reduce the deer population by forcing a irrational harvest plan. Every area that has introduced this type of program has seen a drastic reduction in the herd and overall hunting to decline. The harvest records reflect the results. Cross Creek and TN. National refuges are primarily waterfowl rest areas that are heavily cropped. The deer herds were drastically reduced to keep the waterfowl crops more available for them. Same thing occurred at the Hiwassee refuge years earlier. Time will tell but Ft. Campbell will be no different. Less deer less harvest less bucks Those other areas that use this method are not known now for their Big Bucks just how good the hunting USE to be!

thats what I feel will happen I do belive a lot of hunters will not make the trip due to shooting a doe first..

Please elaborate landman. Because Cross Creeks regs still allow a 3 deer limit in archery season but only one can be antlered.
