I just literally unwrapped the pallet of dunstans at Wally world in Franklin. I picked through them and got mine. They also had persimmon, crab apple, and sawtooths. So I thought i would let everyone know...

I think they look good. Their in 3 gallon pots and leaved out nicely. Some of the bigger ones have tassel like things on them. The ones I picked out were 8 to 9 foot and about as thick as my thumb or better at the base. Their all staked and are 25$...

Ill have to go see the crabs. Wondering what varieties they have. I really want some Dunstans but when I factor them into a long term goal, not a good choice for smaller fields that you want plenty of light coming in to. Might just get Dunstans for the yard.
 
Thanks for the heads up, went by my local wally world and picked up 2 chesnuts and two crabapples. The crabs were labeled as native crabapples.... Tree's range from 6'-8' and about as thick as your thumb, this was in Elizabethton, Tn

I got four. The persimmons and sawtooths looked good but they had the appearance that they grew to fast. I'm going to re-pot them(chestnuts) and stake them better. They are definitely top heavy.

I was going to repot them up in 5 gallon buckets and wait till fall to put them in the ground. Do you think a 5 gallon bucket is a big enough upgrade or should I put them in something bigger? Oh and will you repot them deeper covering up more of the trunk to make them more sturdy?

Definitely dont bury them deeper. That is detrimental to the growth and survival.

I agree. I am going to re pot them in a larger tree pot. I have some bamboo stakes that I will use to keep them straight. I will also plant in the fall.
 
HH, I left out If you use a five gallon bucket drill holes in it to let the water drain. I might have some extra tree pots if you need them. You work at the Franklin store? That is where I bought mine.

No I don't work for Wally world but I work in Nashville and live in Thompson station so I drive through Franklin nearly everyday. Ive got some extra 5 gallon buckets that I can drill holes in. I just didn't know if that was big enough for them all summer? Thanks

I live in spring hill so if you need anything let me know. If you go the 5 gallon bucket route they will do fine.

I have the Superior Chinese Chestnuts and the Dunstans. All the info I have read indicate that they both drop anytime from the end of Sept. through the beginning of Oct. depending on the weather as when they will fall in that time frame.
 
I have the Chinese as well, I just want them for mast production. So I was wondering if there was any advantage to having both. Thanks.
 
Well, I've been out of town a bit and haven't been following this, so I'm guessing I missed the ones around here. Might drive out to WWORLD after work and see if they have any left.

Well, I took a chance and drove to the Wally world on the other side of the county and scored 6 Dunstan Chestnuts. Gotta decide if I'm just going to transplant them to larger pots or take a chance on putting them in the ground. Since these are for around the house I'll probably take the chance and plant them.

They had about 6 of them left after my take, and they also had plenty of sawtooth oaks, a couple of crab apples, and one persimmon.
 
Bought 3 well-shaped Dunstans from the Franklin/Cool Springs store back in late April. Picked one more up today that wasn't as nice but I just had to have another. They have 3 left but are very spindly and crooked. Plenty of sawtooths left that look decent.
 
The ones I bought were really nice and potted them up in 10 gallon pots and they've really grown out good. I bet their 9 to 10 foot now and branching nicely

Thats great,I have several that are about 2 foot tall ,I put them in 3 gallon pots and water almost every day,if not every.Waiting to see growth,doesnt seem like they are doing much yet.But they look good,despite a little frost damage.
