Took my dad hunting on a new-to-him spot yesterday morning. I set him up against a thicket and small field, and I went to hunt a big dry creek bed.

Brought my shooting stick with me as there is a shortage of rests and some longer shot opportunities. I stepped into the creek about 10 minutes after shooting light and stood there looking around. Not 2 minutes later, a doe eases down the bank about 70 yards away. I put the 270 on the monopod and settled the crosshairs on her shoulder. BANG!

Sand kicked up past her and slightly in front, and she turned, hopping away and snorting. No blood or hair. Confused, I look my gun over and suddenly realize my idiot mistake - the scope mount in front is loose. I tighten it down with a quarter in my pocket and make the same shot on a plastic bottle with no problems.

Can't believe I made such a rookie mistake. First time in 15 or so years that I've done that. At least it was a clean miss!

I got a couple in the freezer, but I gave another away with the confidence that I'd be killing more before the season was up. I was mistaken :)

Look on the bright side, you got to go hunting with your dad!

Very true! And he had 3 deer sneak up behind him as well, but they busted him as he turned. A good way to round out the season (seeing deer, that is).
