The USFW has released the preliminary duck and pond numbers. Total ducks up 5 million. Looks like it could be a good year if we get the right weather. A complete report is on the DU website. ducks.org
 
Johnny Bond, I'm in your camp on this ....believing that the "numbers are up" from your government is rather, let me be clear, sheer lunacy.

The hype, P.R. spin, push from politicians, gear manufacturers, media types has to be distorting. I was thinking about all the water in the Dakota's and Montana this nesting season and reading about all the "high water" in the media that is good for duck production. Divers, yes, more to a degree, but puddlers, they need DRY nests. Wet, flooded grassland acreage doesn't produce ducks. Just my two cents. Have a great fall and good luck and safety on your hunting trails. I love waterfowl hunting and am going until they shut it down, which they won't because it is now all about the money, not about the ducks.
 
If memory serves and being closer to 60 than 50 my memory isn't that great but I recall that in the old days there were years in which all of the money raised in Georgia from D.U. "fundraisers", and it was in the hundreds of thousands, not a single penny ever made it out of the state to D.U. duck production property purchases. It all went for fundraisers.

I gave up on DU along time ago. I threw everything I had that had DU on it in the garbage. I believe Delta Waterfowl is alot better organization and believe in there waterfowl management methods alot more. Or atleast until it really all comes to the money with them. Which will happen one day.
 
I don't know if the counts are accurate or not, but the guy I hunt with in northern Alberta said they have had the best hatch he's ever seen.
 
This isn't a DU report, it's a USFWS report. For our flyway, duck production is driven by the amount of water on the prairie pot hole region. It doesn't matter it they are divers or dabblers, they both need water. The report has nothing to do with marketing. The last few reports have been less than stellar, I for one am glad to see a potential upswing.
 
I have been in the eastern dakotas the last three years and it is wet as hell. go back and look at the reports from 2003 to 2006 and tell me it is all marketing.

As far as DU - i have been involved with a local chapter about 10 years. i see the accounting figures and we have sent a large sum of money to aid in habitat conservation and restoration. Also remember that DU invests 86 % of their funds "on the ground". COmpare this to any sizable charity of your choice and let me know what you find. You may disagree with DU's methods but ultimately what is going to help waterfowl populations is conserved land. Once it is developed you cant get it back. Do your research and post something informed.
 
Reports comign out of SD where my FIL hunts every year are great...wettest spring/summer they have had in a long time.

I understand the reservations about listenting to DU but nearly every biologist I have heard speak on the matter says that if it is wet in Canada and the pot hole region then it leads to better hatches and less predation.

Well I would like to see them do something to improve the hunting in TN... and not just West Tn either... the hunting where I live (southern middle) sucks compared to the Benton Co. area where I grew up hunting.
 
The duck hunting in southern middle tennessee has always sucked compared with west tennessee. The reason is simple - there is more habitat in west tennessee so obviously more gets conserved. This is wise expenditure of dollars since the best habitat gets conserved first.

If you want to make a difference join a DU or Delta chapter and volunteer your time. This does not have to revolve around money.
 
I was a member of DU at one time.... even bought the truck tags... until some of my hunting buddies took a trip to Arkansas and were turned away from a hunting property because they weren't a "high dollar sponsor" of DU even though they were members.... they stopped their membership and so did I.

Seems like anything else public, if that's all you have to hunt, your $hit out of luck....
 
Numbers, numbers, numbers. As duck hunters we will believe what we want to and take whatever information given and try to turn it into something positive.....But one thing I've learned about duck hunting, I don't care how high the numbers are. WEATHER IS WHAT MAKES DUCK HUNTING!!!! You can have poor numbers but great weather conditions and pile'em....or you can have "record" numbers and poor weather and run outta food in the blind. haha.
