Ok I was watching tv the other day and this is about the jest of what the guy did.

He drove what looked to be about a 1 1/2" diameter steel rod into the ground.
He pulled it out and squirted a small amount of "scent" in each hole.
Different scent in each hole.
Then he stuffed some sheeps wool down in the hole.

Then he cleared a spot, set his trap and then covered it with dirt with his shakerbox.

Then put the chain under a log and threw down an anchor, that looked like a hook you throw and then climb up the rope like batman. :D

I figure some chain attached to a tree or something else will work too.

What type of scent would you put in the holes?

Will this type of set up really work ?

The most important thing about making a set in my opinion is make sure your trap will be there with any critter you catch. If the trap is secure properly...it won't do you any good to catch something and have it gone with the trap.

Rebar, drags, and cable/chain stakes are your three basic options. If you use a single stake of rebar, a coyote will pull that, so can a coon or bobcat in some circumstances. So cross staking rebar stakes is a necessity if you use rebar. I prefer chained super stakes....you can get them from MTP. Quick easy, won't go anywhere.

A dirt hole set is the basic land set. I use Carmen's red fox gland lure, or June's coyote lure on sheeps wool. I also make bait out of beaver meat that works real well. Dig a hole deep enough, bed the trap properly in front, make sure it's freeze proof...you're in business.

Those scents are called lures. A lot of them will make you throw up until you get used to them.

It's been 30 years but thinking about it I can still smell the crawfish oil/lure I used in some coon and mink sets. Worst stuff you ever smell.

Breaking a bottle in the house is grounds for divorce, seriously.

Ok so from what I see the super stake is the metal pointed thing with a cable attached to it ?

You drive it into the ground and attach your trap chain to it.

Then I see stake pullers.

You hook up to it and just pull it upwards, out of the ground?

I don't trap anymore but if I did and I could only pick one dry land set it would be the dirt hole, my second choice would be a pee pole. And speaking of stakes, take a piece of angle iron and drill a hole on both sides and one in top for a I-bolt. Take some rebar and weld a washer on top to drive through the angle and attach trap to I-bolt. This gives a x or a triangular anchor point that can't be pulled up.

Yeah the super stakes are metal bullet looking anchors, except I recommend the ones with chain, not cable. I have never had once break you can reuse them.

The terminal swivel on the trap chain has a hole that will take a j-hook. Get some super strength j-hooks, run one through the swivel and attach to the end of the chain stake, close the j hook. Now you're ready to drive the stake. There is a j-hook tool made by a guy named ron marsch....sold by MTP. It's like $20. Very good for opening and closing j-hooks. I recommend the super duty super stake puller. I made one myself. They can be very tough to pull in hard ground.

This is how I do it. I wish I had started off with this system but it took me experiementing over the years to settle on it.

Just got done rigging up a dozen exactly like this. I've never used the anchors always rebar. What do you drive your anchors in with? Thin piece of rebar or maybe a railroad spike? How deep do these anchors need to be driven?

You need to get the appropriate driver made for the anchor: superstake, Berkshire, pogo, etc.

Heavy Duty Super Stake Driver work for the super stake?

Ruger,
The idea behind any set is to get the animal to "work" your set. maximizing the possibility that it will step on the pan and get caught.

That is why you use bait/lures. Putting it down a hole makes them think there is something good down there and they need to work at it. Just like digging out a mouse or mole. The more they stomp around your set, the more likely they will step solidly on the pan and get caught.

The Urine post set or Pee pole, is a similar idea which capitalizes on the marking instinct of predators. watch a dog sniff a hydrant then pee on it. Yotes, foxes, and bobcats do the same thing. Then think...where should I put my trap and lure to entice my target to step right on that pan?

There are a zillion ways to do it and a zillion details but that is basically trapping in a nutshell. What Can I do to get my trap where it wants to step ?
