Beautiful morning this morning and was able to get out for the first time this year. Was blessed to have a baby girl in July and with my son who won't be 2 until Halloween I haven't tried to get in the woods yet. In-laws were came into town this weekend and I was able to get out hunting.
Hunted some public land and sat on the edge of a thicket and some open oak woods. About 7:30 I heard a noise behind me and I stood up and tried to see if I could see anything coming out of the thicket. About 10 minutes later this guy came feeding out of the thicket into the open woods. He was walking directly at me and about 30 yards locked eyes with me. He must of not been bothered and kept coming. At about 20 yards he turned his head around to lick his side and I was able to draw back. I realized the angle he was walking I needed to either shoot with him quartering to me or let down and draw and shoot him on the other side of my tree. He was already a little jumpy and I didn't want to potentially spook him trying to draw again. It's hard enough to draw once on a deer let alone twice. I shot him at 10 yards quartering towards me. I saw the arrow bury about 15" in his chest and he mule kicked and took off. I watched him run 60 yards and lost sight of him. I gave him a minute and got down and checked for blood. I found none at the spot of the impact and I followed his path in the mud and leaves until the last spot I saw him and realized I lost sight of him because he was dead on the ground.
I was about 18' up in the tree in my stand and with the deer only being 10 yards it was a really steep shot angle. I did not get a pass through and so blood would have to fill up the whole chest cavity before I started spilling out. When I gutted him I had hit both lungs and a rib on the offside is all that kept the arrow from a pass through.
This was in the CWD zone and I took the buck to Masons Processing outside of Covington. They are making anyone who drops a deer pay up front and they are a TWRA Sampling Station for CWD. They are offering a 10$ CWD insurance if you have a deer test positive they are giving you the processing money back minus the 10$ insurance fee.
