When and what is the best to plant to have a good dove field by the opener?

I'd say plant sunflowers.

Millet. It's cheap, easy to plant, and will grow on concrete. Allow 90-100 days to mature, and start mowing strips as low to the ground as you can a couple of weeks before your shoot is planned. If you really want to draw the birds, burn it.

If you go with sunflowers, it's best to have them planted before May 15th.

I planted 40.5 acres of sunflowers last week, starting on Tuesday and finishing up on Thursday. the time frame was due to travel time from field to field, my perodovic seed cost about $40 per 50 pound bag and I used 165 pounds of seed, I now have an almost perfect stand of plants growing on an approximate 5.8 inch seed spacing on 38 inch rows

35 pounds of planted seed per acre is just plain crazy

there are approximately 8400 seeds per pound of peredovic seed, 26000 to 30000 seed per acre according to University of Arkansas and Mississippi State

Mississippi State also did a 3 year study comparing clearfield and peredovic seed and the final result is basically no difference in yield, the clearfield technology is way behind the chemical curve simply because the main problem weeds controlled by the herbicide "Beyond" were not controlled by applying the herbicide

bottom line pigweed and marestail were resistant to "Beyond Herbicide" long before these two weeds were resistant to Roundup or anyother gly-4 product according to Helena Chemical Corp

just do your research

I am at 4 pounds per acre on 38 inch rows, 50 pound sack of seed cost me $35 per 50 pounds and I have basically perfect stands on 9 fields with an overall total of 40.5 acres

That's what I'm hoping for. Planted 6 acres Sunday. This is my third year planting sunflowers and I think I got it all dialed in with the spacing, herbicide , and fertilize. I appreciate you taking the time to post all that info. It's really helped me out a bunch.

I'm thinking brown top millet, 60 day maturity? Is an acre enough for 4-5 shooters?

we average 1 shooter per acre, but we do not like a crowded field

my bushog is 10 feet wide, I only mow a 10 foot strip around the perimeter of all fields and 1 or 2 -- 10 foot wide strips across the fields, if you mow to much they will usually sprout from the September rains

I have mixed millet seed and fertilizer together

I sprayed with roundup when mature to help keep clean

been a few years since I did this
