dove field advice

I have a place to plant and 5-6 acre dove field this year and am really excited to be able to throw and hunt for friends and family.

I want to plant sunflower, but I would like some advice as to best way to do this. What are the # per acre and is it just spread and cultipac? We are gonna mix in manure for fertilizer a few weeks before planting.

Check the back of the sunflower seed packet for recommended planting dates. Most packets have a color coded map on the back that will give you this information. Planting dates will vary depending on the variety and the region in which they will be planted.

the site Hawk listed has become the "Bible" for the guys/gals that love to dove hunt, target planting date is April 20 for Haywood County if soil temp is anywhere above 50 degrees, 4 inches deep at 8 am in the morning, the hybrid seed is costly but by far the best, planting rate with this type seed in 1 seed per every 4-6 inches on 38 inch row spacing, to have a top knotch field you will have to invest dollars in your chemicals, the only thing we do different is we will burn field down with a full rate of roundup anytime asap after August 1 to kill any weeds/grasses that made it thru the summer and to speed up the brown up on the flowers, do not over bushog the field, if field is clean it will attract plenty of birds, over bushogging will only result in seeds resprouting with the normal fall rains, if you have any questions please give me a call, Ray Powell 1-731-780-7-4320. I/we do 5-6 fields every year totaling a little over 30 acres

the hybrid seed listed on the site that Hawk posted is based on seed per acre not pounds of seed per acre, to much seed will result in small weak plants with small heads, I do not have my history planting book with me right now, but going on memory I am guessing 26,000 seed per acre, if you need to spray "Select" over the top, use 12 oz per acre instead of the label listed 8 ounces per acre

For a long time, it seems to me, 'round here folks planted their dove fields in May...more around cotton-planting time. I think Al was the first one I know of to start planting in April, maybe? I was turkey hunting one day (near Tax Day) and tried to talk him into going, and he said he had to plant his dove field.

Dang priorities! (That tom was a monster.)

Taylor, just factor in dove field planting, turkeys and crappie fishing, how does one have time for a paying job, lol

you can "no-til" sunflowers if ya want to, burn down with roundup 15-20 days before plant time, then plant, when no-tilling I usually wait till the 25th of April since no-til soil is usually cooler than worked up soil
