Dove Decoys

Do you use them for doves? What kind, how many, and do you think it makes a difference? What about placement if you do use them, do you use a random pattern, or do you have something more specific?

I use the motion decoys. They tend to work very well. No specific pattern when placing them. Good luck.

I have been using 6 of the hard plastic bodied ones with a wind mojo. Bought a Lucky Duck flapper to add this year. Had a hawk think he was gonna get an easy meal and got disappointed when his claws just scrapped and he didn't have a bird, lol. Wish I had that on camera.

I've read several times that the only ones that actually attract birds are the ones with the motorized wings. The problem is those are pricy, about 50 dollars a piece.

My theory is that if you're on a TWRA field, with hundreds of hunters, a motorized decoy won't make any difference because there are so many people moving around that the doves will just fly in when they get hungry or gutsy enough. I doubt a decoy would influence them at all. If you're hunting alone or with a few buddies, I could definitely see a group of those cheap plastic decoys making a difference if you know that doves use the area you're placing them in.

Mojos work great but should be used with caution if hunting a field with other shooters, due to low flying birds. If I'm hunting a field with a power line, I'll always have one or two decoys on the line.

Easy!! I keep a couple of cheap spinning rod/reels loaded with 10-12 lb line. I tie the decoy to the line then throw or cast the decoy over the power line. Then reel the decoy to the power line and let the weight of the fishing rod keep the decoy tight to the line.
If your dealing with really high lines, carry a 2-3 oz sinker with you. Fast sinker over line and let it fall all the way to ground. Then tie on decoy and don't the same as if your dealing with a short line.
