I was reading a lot of you seem to use a modified choke for doves. I only have a mod and an XX full turkey at the moment.

The two times I shot skeet I used no choke.... obviously I will be doing as much practice as I can afford shortly before Sepetember. I guess it's better to keep the choke in and improve my shooting skill? Not enough shot to hit the bird without a choke?

I shot for years with nothing but a modified choke and did fine. It'll do fine with some practice. Eventually I went with an improved in the top barrel and modified on the bottom and did better.

He probably talking about a "skeet" choke.... (I hope, as Stik is correct).

It all depends on your hunting setup. When hunting with my Rem. 11-87 with 28" barrel, on a field edge, mod or full for me using # 7.5 or #8's. If I am hunting small open areas in a cove of woods with a small field where close shots will be the norm, I will use a imp. cyl.

Last year however, I used my cousins Benelli Nova with 28" barrel, I shot a Kicks High Flyer Mod. choke tube with #9's and was making some very nice long range shots that were nothing short of amazing for myself as far as shooting.

Remember, it's all about the lead when swinging through on a bird.

I use modified early in the Season, but the birds seem to fly higher by week 2 or so after being shot at so I'll tighten up accordingly. Also, if I am hunting on a windy day, I'll go with the Mod.

OK thanks all....

Hate to say it... I meant no choke, just the threads, while skeet shooting. Bad advice from a friend I guess, he took his choke out when we were shooting skeet at his place so I assumed it would be ok. The threads are still in good shape though, I guess the #8 shot didn't do much harm.

Will be practicing with the mod from now on... and hope to be good enough come september.

I use IC almost exclusively on doves.

If I am hunting in a setting where I know many of the shots will be at longer range, then I'll switch to MOD. However, for years now I've tried my best to make sure I put myself in a position where most of my shots are going to be much more "up close & personal."

I enjoy dove hunting best when I can see the dove's eyeball when I take the shot. I like getting close.

I always used a modified or improved cylinder for doves. Keep your gun moving and swing through the shot. Keep your head down on the barrell rather than raising up at the shot. When you raise your head, you have a tendency to stop your gun which will make you shoot behind most of the birds. Concentrating on these few things always helps my shooting.

I believe you may be referring to the "plug," and not the choke.

I know you have to be plugged, but thought there was a law that you cannot hunt with an unchoked shotgun . I don't know where I heard that or fell asleep and dreamed it!!

Oh yeah I have my dern stupid plug saved for dove season, better remember to put it in before opening day....

i took mine out to use it deer hunting 1 year at oakridge, got to a wma to dove hunt & cked gun & had to whittle a plug.forgot about it & it dryed out/bent.ended up taking the whole tube off to get it out :( ,livenlearn :)

I'd make one out of a dried piece of bamboo cane if I had to or lost the original plug. I took mine out cause I like loading my gun up with 6 rounds (or 5 if it's turkey loads). I won't use the plug unless required by law... in this case, with doves.

Less than a month till dove season!

Don't mean to hijack the thread but what brand do you guys prefer? I am thinking about getting a Kicks.
don't worry bout hijacking, got my question answered already. The mod that I have came with my gun, for me it's whatever I got that gets the job done.
