TWRA Seeking Comments on Proposed Douglas Lake Smallmouth Bass Amendment

NASHVILLE --- At its October meeting, the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission postponed decisions on the state�s 2015-16 sport fish proclamation until the commission�s Dec. 5, 2014 meeting in Nashville.

This TFWC action allows time for the public to comment on a recently proposed amendment to the proclamation. The amendment would change the harvest regulations for smallmouth bass on Douglas Lake.

Under the current regulations, anglers can harvest one smallmouth bass per day with a 20-inch minimum length limit. The new proposal would impose a 16-inch minimum length limit on smallmouth bass and allow harvest of up to five smallmouth bass per day (in combination with largemouth and spotted bass). The current regulation is protecting larger fish in the population.

Smallmouth bass between 16 and 20 inches represented 23 percent of the fish collected in the last survey. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency would like to gauge the public interest in a lower length limit and an increased creel limit to allow more fish to be harvested.

I would rather see an 18" limit like they do on most of the TN River system reservoirs. I also like a slot like they do on Dale Hollow. 1 fish under 16" and 1 fish over 21". The number of 3-4 lb smallmouth in Dale Hollow makes for a fun trip when you can get on them.

dont like what they came up with... but i guess it will have to do....this doesn't benefit the tournament angler at unless you have a jet boat and go to the river... i think it needs to 15in statewide..... this rule is just like norris and norris stinks!!! guess douglas will too...

yes they are!! caught more smallies there this year than ever before, and alot of 17 to 19in fish. like the new rule
 
Like it isn't hard enough to keep up with the changes on the lakes that take place every year, now you get to keep up with two separate size limits on the same species in the same lake according to what day it is. Go one way or the other and 'KISS'.

I have nothing against tournaments, but should the TWRA set the laws according to what tournaments want? The laws should set for the health of the fishery and overall enjoyment by all.
I wish Priest could get a slot limit of some kind. Something like keep 4 under 12 or 13" and 1 over 18, 19, 20, 21, or maybe even larger. Wish all the lakes in the state could go to that.
