I don't know why it is, but running so many censuses, I end up seeing patterns in things, and one of the patterns I see everywhere is yearling bucks who have damaged their velvet antlers. I can't count the number of yearlings I've seen on camera with one antler hanging down along the side of their face. Maybe it's their inexperience with having growing antlers, but they sure do break them up at a MUCH higher rate than older bucks.

All I can say is "WOW!"

I bet you relive that miss in your nightmares.
Haunts me on the regular…like I said I was setup on a wild rose bush that had a huge scrape he was working in the edge of a big swamp. I never set up for a 40 yard shot it's just to far IMO but I had no trees available closer to climb. He came out of the swamp at 3:30pm and proceeded to work what I thought was the scrape I was setup on. I guess the adrenaline was pumping too hard and I didn't realize he wasn't working the scrape on the end of the rose bush but instead was making a new scrape on the back side of the rose bush putting him at 48 yards…I drew back and let it fly without ranging him thinking it was 40 yards!!! My arrow clipped 3 white hairs off his brisket and I never seen him or got a picture again….

That's tough. I'd be lying if I pretended I don't have some of my own screw ups. They hurt lol

2013 in illinois I shot a 140" 8 point that I was just ecstatic over right at first light running a doe. As soon as he fell a 200" buck entered the picture with her and ran to the neighbors field. Few minutes go by and boom! Had never seen anything like that in my life. I have a really hard time since then pulling the trigger on first bucks that come in. Thats my nemesis about older deer to this day. Im reminded of this every year up there as my lessor is the brother of my neighbor. He thanks me every year!

Deer actually scored 204 and some change.

People might think I'm full of it but chances are good I'd have been happier with the 140" 8pt.

200" means one of two things. Either it's a clean buck with an out of this world big rack or it's a smaller rack with a bunch of junk. The bunch of junk is by far the most common way to get 200". But to get 140" with only 8 points to score, you're for sure talking an enormous rack.

I have definitely been blessed by the properties ive been able to hunt over the years. The 8 was nice but nothing like the other. He had a gigantic frame. He was a mainframe 14 and with alot of trash to boot. I truly didn't know what a giant was until that moment. You truly never know what might step out at any moment.
I went through that spell of hunting horns after that and got burned out pretty badly. Past few years doing plots and just getting back in the woods enjoying why I hunted has got me going again though.

If it makes you feel any better, it's still haunts me that I missed a TN elk with a rifle in 2014. It was an off handed 100 yard shot and knew I pulled before the gun went off but couldn't take it back. May be my only opportunity to ever kill an elk and most certainly will be in TN……….

That would be worth a cuss word or two.

I shot the biggest buck of my life last year, got poor penetration and he lived only to be killed by my buddy! I was glad he killed him but it still sucked!

Ohh man that's a tough one to have to shoulder! You still have time to do it again…

Man what a buck! Tough pill to swallow not killing him but at least your buddy got him. Just out of curiosity, were you shooting a mechanical?
