Don't you love misfires

The wife and I are back in the box stand from yesterday afternoon and she says deer right in front of us, a very large main frame 6 walks out with a split right brow and a kicker on his left G2, he was around 20-21" wide and his G2s were 10+, she said I really don't want to shoot him this early and I said we'll I will, she said go ahead, bout that time he gets spooked and runs to the wood line and stopped, I put it on him and pull the trigger, my cap goes off but no boom, I hold it on him for a couple of seconds then look up at my cap and the dang gun goes off, I went and looked just to make sure but I think the barrel was aiming bout 4 feet above the deer, first buck I've shot at in 3 years

It happens to all of us buddy. When it comes to deer hunting I wouldn't have any luck if it wasn't for bad luck. Hopefully u will get another chance. It sounds like an awesome buck to me the way u described him.

I feel your pain, man! Opening morning I had a fizzle (bad 209 primer) at a doe. The same afternoon my girlfriend had a misfire as well (still not 100% sure how it happened) and sent a 1/2 charge in the direction of what would have been her first buck (& deer for that matter). Things like that have plagued me before in the past, but not in the past few years. I feel more confident in my crossbow than my muzzleloader! Keep hunting and things will all come together as they should. Good luck!

It is very frustrating. I had a few with my original Hawkin style M/L.

I once popped three caps at a buck about 80 yards out. He would raise his head up each time, then go back to picking. After my third and last cap I had failed to ignite the gun. I just sat there and watched him feed for another 20 minutes !

Have had zero issues since going to a T/C Omega using 209s.

I had 2 mis-fires on two different guns last year (an in-line and a percussion cap style). There is certainly something to be said for using your own gun that you clean yourself... I've been borrowing muzzleloaders for 8 years. Time to buy one and take some time to maintain it

I've eliminated misfires by unloading the muzzleloader each hunt and keeping the flash hole in the breech plug clean. I also use Bh209 and Federal 209 primers. I pull the breech plug and push the sabot and powder out the bore. I load with fresh, dry powder each hunt.

Here's a little tip that most of you should know. With a mzl. in cold weather, I mean really cold, don't take your gun inside after a day hunting if you plan to hunt the next day. That is okay if you are going to clean it. But if you are going to leave it loaded, leave somwhere safe outside. If you take it inside, it will "sweat" (cold metal in warm air.)When you go back out side, yo may find that either the condensation got your firehole damp and it froze or just refused to fire.

When hunting Canada at way below zero, I never took my gun inside or put it in a zip case. Left it on the porch muzzle down for two days and on the third day, fired like a riflegun.

Same can hold for temps in the 20's here. In fact, mine is outside, locked in the truckmobile in anticipation of a hunt tomorrow morning, now.

Rifles taken inside in severe cold can have the firing pin freeze with the same results. Good idea to dry fire one a few times once it warms up. I like to shoot mine through the passenger side floorboards.

Bowriter is right...temperature changes will ruin the powder in the bore. I like to keep my muzzleloader inside so I load when I get outside at my hunting spot with fresh, dry BH209.

I don't use pellets for that very reason,I had never had a mis fire with my knight until I used pellets one year,went back to powder never happened again,got to talking to others that had same problem,look at your breach plug, its around 1 inch long ,so the fire from the cap has to go that far before it hits the pellets,where powder is right against the cap and fire,I know some people love pellets but I will never use them again.

That's why I use a flintlock and real black powder. Can't get more reliable than that...LOL.
