Mainly for the Fly South tourney but also enjoying whatever bit in the harpeth river.

First I stopped by a pond and got 2 carp for the tournament. Then caught a few other species in the Harpeth river. Buffalo have disappeared today, did not see a single one in their usual spots. Met another guy fishing for the tourney in the harpeth.

The carp won't win anything unless they add enough weight to my total weight if I somehow managed to catch that many....

I went today, too, and caught a couple buffalo on the Cumberland - nothing big.
I'm excited you're getting into catching stuff on the fly rod. I wish the desire had hit you before the cicada hatch last year - truly unbelievable.

I wish I would have fished for carp at all during the cicada hatch. Actually I may have, but they were not sipping cicadas in that stretch of river and the only thing that would hit the cicadas was bluegills sucking the juice and spitting them out. I was just getting into carp fishing and didn't take advantage of the hatch. Gotta wait a few years now...

I will be targeting buffalo and grass carp tomorrow at location X.

I hooked a drum in the harpeth this evening but the line broke next to the hook from being frayed somehow. Re-tied and now using real tippet material instead of Stren 6 lb mono. :D Also the "eyes" on those nymphs don't last very long, they break off. Bought a couple olive nymphs at Academy this evening.

It was frustrating - redhorse, the occasional buffalo, and drum swimming right by me. The drum especially got me, swimming in a circle 5 feet around me, not taking the fly... and when one did take the fly, the line broke. Now will retie if any nicks show up on the line.

Usually, the drum are pretty aggressive but the buffalo couldn't care less about taking a fly. It's pretty frustrating. Good luck at X.

He will tell you "Oh, I'm not gonna fish much this year." But he'll be out there.

He will tell you, "Oh, I only caught a couple fish today." But he will load up the scoreboard when he goes by Fly South.

He will tell you, "Oh, nothing big." But he will weigh in a 25 pounder before it's over.

He is a tough competitor. :)

Oh, puuuuhleeeeese! I weigh in every single fish as soon as I catch it, so there's no mystery to it. YOU, my lawyer friend, wait until closing argument to lay out all your cards! :D

No siree! I put up every fish on the board as soon as I get the chance. I like the fun of watching the scoreboard and the jockeying for position too much. No sandbagging here!

Anyway, I wasn't suggesting that you don't weigh in fish as soon as you catch them. I was just saying that you're all cool and nonchalant and "oh I'm not fishing much this year," but you have a knack for consistently producing big fish every year.

I get nervous about my spot on the board every time I hear you are going fishing.

I would feel the same about gil but probably more so about you since you racked up those 45,138 common carp a couple days ago. Now I am frightened by the thought of you going fishing.

I fished a brand new place last Sunday, with an approach that was a little different from how I usually fish. I guess it paid off fairly well. :)

The funny thing is that it was almost accidental that I found those fish. I got out at 5:00 a.m. and fished my regular haunts until 10:30 without a single bite. There were some carp moving on the flats I fish, but it was so muddy from the heavy rains that I think they just couldn't see my fly.

So I went on a loooong boat ride searching for some clear water. I finally found some, and I was on fish for the rest of the day.

At this point I'm in huge suspense because I haven't ever fished that way before - I don't know if Sunday was a one-off fluke, or if those fish are there all the time. If they are there for the rest of the month, it should be pretty good for me. :)

what does your boat look like? I am following you next time just to find the secret spot.... in return I will tell you where the grass carp are, after the tournament. :D

I fish out of a white Custom Gheenoe with a poling platform. It's pretty recognizable because there aren't many around here like it.

I would love to get a shot at those grass carp, in August or any other time!

Sounds like a cool boat. I wouldn't raid your carp spots though - I want to work to find my own spots like you did for yours. I know a few now but always wanting to look for more.

I'll give you a hint on the grass carp - they are not triploid stocked carp, at least to my knowledge. Not bread fed or tame. And they aren't the ones in marrowbone. not quite that spooky.
