You're in your stand and hear the crashing of limbs. That sound keeps getting closer to your stand then goes silent. You keep your eyes peeled in that direction and down through the woods you finally lay eyes on a doe. She's headed your direction and should come right by your stand. As she nears you see the buck following behind. He's a shooter. The doe passes by within 20 yards of you. This is going to be a piece of cake. Then for no reason the doe turns and heads 90 degrees away from you as the buck stands back there watching her. Instead of following in the does tracks he sees her headed down the timber now and cuts the corner headed straight to her. All you can do is catch glimpses of him headed through the branches without a decent shot. Then they're gone. Exciting but I hate it when that happens.

The places I hunt, thats a dead deer or both. Too thick to see more than 50-60 yards and I can usually find a hole to shoot through at that distance.

What usually happens is I hear crashing, Grunting, more crashing... get a glimpse of brown moving fast through the thick stuff 40 yds away, then they are gone.

With a rifle a hot doe might get smoked if she is that close. That buck will still come in with her lying dead in front of me. In most cases.

^I did it last year as a doe was running by and didn't even think she was being chased. I put her down and a minute later a 8 point walked out right in front of me looking for here. That was a good morning

Yep I learned the hard way many years ago, that when legal, it sometimes pays to high shoulder the doe and put her down right there where you can see her. Even if he spooks at first many times he will come back, even other bucks will sometimes follow her trail later on, as she obviously smells good or an older buck wouldn't be with her to start with!
Bow hunting is when this will get you the worst however, just not the options available like a gun/mz.
