Just wondering if anyone else out there keeps a hunt journal? And if so is it more of a technical journal detailing all the specs of the hunt such as time, temp, barometric pressure, location, sightings etc. or as I do a journal to detail the parts of the hunt that made it memorable?

For me the hunt is about the experience, the events that add up, whether they be moments of sheer boredom interrupted by intense excitement or just the awesome amazement of being outdoors. I like to record the details of what my decisions were during the hunt and why, my thoughts before during and after the shot, and what was most memorable about the hunt.

For example the biggest body deer I've killed so far was about 3 years ago. I shot it with my .308 at roughly 210 yards or so. It bounded off, tail up as if I didn't hit it, crossed a fence onto the neighboring property and disappeared. I waited a bit, got down and found no blood. Finally after going back a third time to where it crossed the fence i found a single drop of blood on a pine needle. Fearing I had wounded the deer I secured permission to cross the fence and look a bit. Once across and after scanning for a moment or so I found the deer laying across a log less than 10 yards from the fence. There was blood sprayed all over the place on that side of the fence. It didn't start spraying blood until it jumped. What makes it memorable is my fears of wounding a deer, second guessing my shot placement, frustration of maybe losing a deer and the sheer relief and elation at finding it.

I do record rifle and load used, location of the hunt and distance. I'm thinking about expanding that info some.

So who else keeps a hunt journal and what do you record?

I still haven't started, but plan on it next year. Check this thread out, same topic

That thread is what got me to thinking about adding more data. Might have to start plugging that info into a spread sheet to see what I can glean from it if anything.

Let me know if you come up with a spreadsheet you'd like to share...I'd love to record as much as I can remember about this year and then really start note taking next season.

I asked my wife to buy me a leather-bound journal last year as a Christmas present, but I foolishly and regrettably haven't started taking notes in it. If I could only rewind time about 6 or 8 years...

My vision for the journal was to give to my kids...it would have the adventures and thoughts and hilarious moments documented in individual trips that made them more than just a "I sat in the woods for 4 hours and saw 2 deer" type of thing.

The other thinking behind it was as a way of reliving the memories in the event that my mind ever left me. I've seen the effects of dementia-type problems, and the horrors that come with someone not remembering things about who they are/were. I thought it would be really incredible to be able to have someone be able to glimpse into my past and see who I *really* was, and not the shell of a person in front of them. Furthermore, it might even be impactful for me, in that state, to hear about the things that I've done and tease out some vestiges of the memories I once recounted so easily.

Anyway...I haven't done it yet, and I'm mad at myself about it. I think I might be able to look at the calendar and "cheat" a bit and be able to fill in some of the better trips from the past year, just to help front-load it with material. That might be something I dedicate some time to over the Christmas break.

If anyone is interested in doing something similar, check out one of those handcraft sites like Etsy and you can probably get a cost effective option for an heirloom-type gift for themselves or someone else.

Crosshairy that is what I've been doin so far and loving it. My youngest has decided she wants to hunt next year so I've been sharing with her some of those recorded experiences to help instill in her e love of the hunt and that it's not all about trophies or racks. Is about the memories.

You certainly should do it. Once you get it started it'll become a cherished part of your hunt.

I did for over 20 yrs but havent the last 10 or so since my kids have been hunting a lot, just havent took the time to keep it up. I will say its a wealth of info to go back to.

I have done a journal in a yearly date book for years. But it was just an overview of the hunt so I can remember it when I look back in my later years. I have a stack of them that I will look back through from time to time.

I don't fool with the detailed stuff, unless it's cold or hot or windy. Then I write "it was cold, or hot, or windy" :D !

I keep a small notebook in the blind and will enter the date, temp, other weather conditions and the time of day if I see any deer and what they are. Make a short note if I kill one. Seems to pass the time of day sometimes. no long stories just some quick notes.

I keep a journal on my Fort Campbell hunts. It basically tells date, unit, location I sat in the unit and what I saw. There is so much to keep up with out there it's the only way I can remember what's worth hunting again or not.

I keep one with the coordinates of where I sat, times of events, and then an export of the day's weather history (plus any pictures from the hunt) in my icloud notes, this off season I'm going to look into different options to better record my hunts.

I have always been hit and miss and I can tell you I regret not doing it every time! Going back and reading ones from 20 years ago I see details written that I had long forgotten!! I urge everyone to "write it down".
