All right so for those who followed my post from the woods yesterday, here are the details along with some video from when I launched a missile to a doe's airbags and gave her a good dirt nap (for you Bowriter).
I started out by putting my bow up in the homemade treestand. I then went down the trail a ways to a good deer trail where the deer often come out of the woods into an open field at sunset. There were fresh tracks and it looked good. I set my lawn chair about 10 yards from an intersection of 2 trails close to where the main trail goes out to the field. The privet and honeysuckle are thick in there. I cut about 3 shooting lanes and piled the bushes around my chair for a makeshift blind. Perfect setup for the evening.
Well I never got to hunt that spot. I got in my treestand at 3pm. At 4:37 pm, here come deer. They are coming from the direction of the creek where they like to bed. It's a doe and two fawns, same deer I saw a couple weeks ago in the same place.
They came out and started feeding their way through the privet. I got my bow drawn and let the doe work her way into an opening where I could shoot. I gave her a "mehhh" and she stopped, and I shot. I think she was at 15 yards but I didn't step it off. Her fawns scattered when I shot.
I did not find the arrow but found blood. I waited 30 minutes, while posting here on Tndeer, before going and looking. The blood trail went towards the river, then veered to the right and followed the course of the riverbank. I found my arrow not too far away, and the blood trail also got thinner and harder to follow. It generally followed a deer trail so I kept on moving and would find blood here and there.
Then I bumped a deer out of a dense patch of privet. Darn, I thought it was my doe. But I wasn't sure, so I went and looked where the deer jumped up from. I found 3 or 4 very fresh beds, and looked for blood matted down in one of them. But the blood trail just went straight through the bedding area with no sign of the doe bedding down. so I guessed I had bumped one of the fawns.
The trail went on past the bedding area, and not too much farther, and there she was, piled into a sinkhole.
I gutted her there, she was a fat one, and piled the guts right into the hole. So far all my deer have died in a convenient place to gut them....
My phone battery was almost dead so I did not get any video of tracking the deer, just used the last bit of juice to video when I found the doe.
I hiked 1/2 mile back to the truck, went home and got the charger (a fairly short drive), gave my phone 3% on the way back, hiked 1/2 mile into the woods with the hand truck and strapped the doe on and hauled her out. Processed her myself in the garage at home, as usual.
