Do you ever wonder when someone asks about guns, scopes, binocs, ammo, calibers, etc, if the person giving the replies really has tried a bunch of different brands or kinds, or are they monogamous with their choices because they have worked well for them and there is no reason to look any further? Do you ever think that some give their 2 cents because they feel like their choice is the best choice because it was the choice they made? Do you ever wonder if some people throw in their 2 cents about something they have no personal experience with?
 
I never comment on something I have not tried in the field,,there are no telling how many people around know I shoot and reload and just drop off guns and want me to work them a magic load,,I have shot a bunch of nice rifles without having to pay for them,,I have also shot a bunch I couldnt get to zero at 50 yards,,LOL..

I also have some reloading die sets I have no idea where they came from,,
 
Mr big, i'm in the same boat as you, i've worked up tons of loads for friends and shot alot of rifles, some really nice and some junk. i do know where all my dies came from BUT i have loaned out several sets over the years and i just can't remember who i loaned the darn things to.... memory loss i guess!
 
I find it interesting to read the replies and recommendations for posts asking for the best scope for the money or the best rifle for the money. We come from many different economic backgrounds and the recommendations always range from the low end scopes to the middle high end scopes. IMO, rifle choices are like choosing between a Ford and Chevy and many people stick to their favorite brands even if they have never picked up a rifle in question to look at the fit, finish, work the bolt, pull the trigger, work the safety, etc. We all have features that appeal to us, and then again, some don't even know of features in some rifles that would appeal to them because they have used Brand A for 20 years and won't look at any other brand. This goes for scopes as well. I buy a lot of the newer scopes on the market and compare them to what I have. I'm not brand loyal when it comes to my scopes, I just want the best for my budget.
 
What it all boils down to is, it is nothing more than opinion, some good ones, some bad ones!! I'll be the first to admit that I am pretty ignorant on issues with rifles/reloading and everything that comes with them. I don't really care about rifles, scopes and whatnot. I just want whatever works best for me to kill the occasional deer with. I have two centerfire rifles in the safe, and honestly, thats one more than I thought I would ever own at one time:)

I feel pretty confident about shotguns, I've shot/handled/owned several different makes and gauges and feel I can be of some help to most when discussing them. But imo, on this forum, no one really seems to care about shotguns. Still, its nothing more than just an opinion based of first hand experiences.

No one really knows me here, but I don't buy anything to baby it. I'm hard on everything I own. If it lasts for me and stands up to whatever abuse I put it through, then I will highly recommend that product and stand behind it 100%. But at the same time, I know that there will be exceptions to everything.
 
The sad part is i have tried lots and lots of stuff to get what i have gotten now. No telling how much money i have spent to get where i am at now. But it was fun. I answere on the things i am pretty sure about and leave the other questions to who else might know.
 
I ask you guys a lot of questions, becasue I know and trust that you have done your homework in the school of hard knocks. Some people you have to consider the source, though. It's like the Reviews you see on on-line shopping sites:

"Great product! 5 Stars! I just bought it yesterday and I can't wait to try it!"

Like Mr. Big, I only comment about stuff I've got first-hand knowledge/experience. If it's hearsay, I'll preface my comment with "I've heard really good things about XXXXX"
 
Just found this post. Before I got married I purchased new rifles all the time. I found out what I didn't like, what worked for me. When I started handloading I loaded for 5 different friends and handled and shot a lot of different makes and calibers. I don't like Rugers and I cannot explain it, just don't like them. I really like the 300 Weatherby but it was the hardest cartridge to reload for, at least for me.

I think,as with a lot of things, people want to participate and may stretch the truth a bit. For example, I have never owned any of the high end scopes. I read the posts because I really want to participate but I've never even touched one except one really old Swarvoski and that was this past summer so I don't post up.

I can understand why some folks comment who clearly don't have the experience they claim in their posts. I just wish them well and move on.
 
If you ever spend any time behind a quality scope you will appreciate the differences between them and the less expensive ones. A word to the wise though. If you do spend some time behind a Swarovski you will never be satisfied with much less.

There are some high end scopes that are somewhat over rated. I drank the koolade of the Nightforce. I bought one brand new and was never as impressed with it as I should have been after spending $1500. I bought a Vortex Viper PST for half what the NF costed. Optically it was as good as the Nightforce. In one area at least it was far better. Then I sold the Nightforce and have not looked back. YMMV

BTW I'm not impressed with many Rugers either. :)
 
I don't comment much about rifles as I have only owned two centerfire rifles in my entire life: a Model 88 lever action Winchester in .308 and a Model 700 Remington Mountian rifle in .270. I have never owned a high dollar scope and would probably be afraid to go hunting with it if I did own one.

My Wincester lever action killed several deer but I was just not happy with the accruacy. My Remington .270 is a great shooting rifle.

But, I have to say a Browning A-bolt in .308 is the sweetest shooting rifle I have ever shot. It belongs to a friend who was having shoulder problems and asked me to sight it in for him. I was so pleased with the rifle, I almost went out and traded my Remington for one, but I simply did not have the money at the time. :(
 
As a rule, if I reply to those posts, its because I have firsthand experience in dealing with the question at hand. As far as calibers, brands, scopes, etc.. Ive either owned them or spent a bunch of time with them!
