Do coyotes ever stop running?

(Other than shooting them...)
Every coyote I see seems to be on a serious mission. Trotting fast, following their nose.
On Sat morning I heard steps behind my climber, but thought it was another deer. Then I noticed it wasn't a deer, and turned to look and saw a beautiful red/gray coyote.
I tried to put a pin on him, but he didn't stop. I made some squeaking sounds and finally whistled, but he stopped at 30yds behind a tree then took off at a trot again.
What sounds will stop them in their tracks?

Barking is what i do also usually only one deep bark is all i do and it stops them but if u bark be ready to shoot because them things seem to no right where u are when u do it

I whistled at one once, and it immediately turned around and ran the other way. I must have a very scary whistle.

If you are calling them they will come in at a trot and stop only when they are trying to get a fix on the source of the sound. If they are just moving along, you gotta take a crack at them, do as best you can. I am always astonished anytime someone kills one with a bow or for that matter a shotgun.

I had one tro by me at 100 yards yesterday while I was deer hunting. Took a moving shot with my 243 but shot behind him. Great practice for shooting at a running deer.

Only time ive gotten two was when i barked at the second one to stop it.

I have gotten 2 while deer hunting (archery season). The first was using a can deer bleat, and not only did it stop him, he came staight to me and stood 20yards out and broadside. The second i made a deer bleat sound with my mouth and same thing happened. I was amazed that calling at him by mouth worked though.( It was awesome lol)
