DIY Ohio Archery

Not asking for honey holes, etc, but I think I am going to give Ohio a try next fall. Looking for suggestions of public land. Would love some input on areas to possibly avoid where there is far to much hunting pressure. Feel free to comment to shoot a pm.

I would research them through articles and what not before opinion. You're going to Ohio so a I assume to shoot a big deer. Find out where the big boys are coming from.

Most people keep good info to themselves and for good reason. Don't fall victim to someone sending you to a dud area so you don't go in "their" honey hole.

I've never been but 8 hear/read great things about the Wayne National Forest

I've been tossing around the idea of Indiana or Ohio the last couple of years.

I spent time researching the countries that produced the best,apping those out and comparing to the available public land.

I came up with... nothing. I pretty much decided I'm just going to have to pick a place and hope I come up with something I can actually hunt.

I may still pick a time in bow season this year and give it a try. Gotta eventually give it a try.

There is tons of state land in Southern Ohio but its gets beat up pretty good, Id say do your homework and study the maps and put the time in. Its pressured for a reason; many pope and young caliber bucks are taken on public every year. Check the state ground around Jackson County/ vinton county. I hunted there last year on a timber lease not far from public and I was very impressed by the bucks I saw. I was lucky enought to get a nice 8 point on the gun opener but had an absolute monster at 44 yards in November I could close the deal on because he was quarter horsing does.

I cannot remember his name, but yes he is a member here. I have watched his videos on youtube as well.

I certainly don't expect honey holes just don't want to spend hours online to gain little to no info. My plan was to try to pick a spot, mark online, then scout post season sign and come back late October 2021.

This may not be much help, but I threw it together while the boys were doing schoolwork. I'm tired of looking at a computer, so I used their coloring pencils instead. :)

Shows the percentage of total harvest by county. Kind of gives a starting point to look at public lands and know which areas to maybe rule out.

We are in the same boat. I was trying to stay in the southern to mid west of the state.

I think I've decided to go check out Clark State Forrest in southern Indiana in a couple of weeks. It's close enough that I can get there and back in a day.

If it doesn't look good, I may pick a spot in Ohio and just go spend 4 days up there in October.

I have pretty realistic expectations. I wouldn't shoot anything unless it's going on the wall. The odds of me going somewhere new and accomplishing that are pretty darn slim.

I just want to go see a new place and enjoy the hunt. If I'm lucky enough to see deer, that's a bonus.

I gotta start getting my butt in shape too! Those topo maps aren't flat like my West TN hunting!!

The Wayne National Forest is a good place to start. It gets pressured but if you're willing to put the work in there are some world class bucks in there to be had.

I hunted southern Ohio for a couple years, If I were going back I'd drive a little farther north from where we hunted.

I hunt Ohio every year, grew up there. I'll be in & out of Ross, Vinton, and Jackson counties from now through November, maybe even later. If anybody needs some help, tips, or just want to meet up for a burger, let me know. I know all the public lands in those counties pretty darn well.
