So this morning got in woods before daylight just as sun was coming up the deer started coming in I had big ol doe standing 30 yards broadside I raise up I get on her real good I pull trigger and it pop sound like a 22 cap misfires by time I get a new one in she's gone I just sat there disgusted and felt defeated on brighter note I have ton of sign where I'm hunting and deer seem to be there every morning and evening. Has anybody else had this happen to them
 
Not exactly but i had the primer pop and some of the powder ignite. then I heard a loud audible pop and think I may have seen the bullet lob into the power line easement.

when the smoke cleared the 8 pt was gone... My brother has had it happen 3-4 times.
 
Back when I used to shoot a old style muzzleloader when I was a kid I had a herd come by me and I raise up to shoot. Pop. They stood there. Put another cap on. Pop. They still haven't moved. I ended up popping no kidding 6 caps and it ain't fired yet. I could see the suckers smiling and laughing as they fed not run off. Only reason it usually happens in our newer muzzleloaders is the your breech plug is too clogged and can't get a fire through it to the powder.
 
Yep, several times over the years with a #11, but not so with a 209.............but I have had plenty of other things happen........don't get me started..... :bash:
 
Man back in the old days with with sidelock it would happen all the time. It seemed it always happen on a good buck too. I hunted with about 4 or 5 buddies back then and on a good cold still morning u would heard that poppfft noise and nearly laugh out loud. Lol. Never with my encore n
 
If your gun takes #11 always snap a couple caps before loading to burn moisture out of the chamber.
 
Had it happen with the old 11 percussion cap in a Hawken style rifle. But the Remington genesis goes boom when I pull the trigger with a rem. Klein bore primer.
 
Sorry about that but if the vent is clear and open the #11 cap will do it's job. In my misspent youth when muzzle loading was new to me and traditional style guns were all there was I had that happen to me one morning on two separate bucks. Needless to say it gave me an education and has never happened since.
 
If everything isn't clean and clear it can happen! I highly discourage popping caps in a clean gun, it just fouls what you spent so much time cleaning. When I used the old black powder MZ's and mine had been sitting a while, I simply ran a dry patch down it to clean any moisture or oil. I also always stored mine horizontally so any remaining oil/lube didn't drain in to my nipple.
 
If you have cleaned your mz some time ago and oiled the barrel and then stacked it muzzle up in the corner, that oil will pool on the breach plug. The oil will contaminate your load unless you remove it. Popping a couple of caps is one way to burn it off.

Just this past Saturday my partner went to pull the trigger on a Nice 8 and his cap just made a small "pop" but not loud enough to spook the deer off. He put another one in and this time a louder pop and a half second delay before his gun fired. This spooked the deer and he drops his last speed loader from his climber. He decides to climb down to reload obviously and when he gets to the bottom and outstanding 10pt hops on the trail 60yrds out, gives him enough time to load his rifle and fire....then He cant find it. It was finally found about 100 yrds from where it was shot.

After talking to him I found out that his gun was still loaded from the previous year and he thinks that all the moisture and rain he hunted in must have dampened the powder....Never though of this but I always clear my gun out after every season just to clean and lube it before I store it for a full year. Guess he learned his lesson. Also If you think this sounds like the luckiest thing you have ever herd....you have no clue the luck this guy has had over the years.

Also Like stated above popping a cap or two before you start the season is a good idea.

Are you SURE that you didn't dry ball?

Yeah, I've had things happen with muzzle loaders. Once I forgot to load at all. Like you said, it did make a nice pop.
 
Just be careful guys. If you hear a pop. Don't just fire another cap. Be sure to run your ramrod down and check to be sure your load is seated fully.

Don't know how it happened but I know a guy that fired a load and got a pop. Somehow it shifted the ball off the load just enough to create some airspace and when he fired it the second time he got a bulged barrel.

My bet is that he had a loose load to start with and it had shifted during the hunt and the first pull of the trigger failed to light the power and the second time ignited the powered on a unseated bullet.
 
I sometimes MZ hunt out in UT. My buddy out there uses Triple 7 pellets, while I have gone to BH209.
A couple of years ago I had taken a mule deer and we were back in camp, packing to leave the next day. He decided to go ahead and fire out his rifle at a stump 25yds away.
Pulled the trigger, heard a pop and fizzle. The bullet went out, but you could see the pellets fly out the muzzle and drop about 10yds away. (I guess his PowerBelts don't seat very tight.)
He then realized he had been carrying this faulty load for days!

yeah I loaded everything into it I did it out on porch it coulda got moisture
 
I'm hoping it was just a lil moisture I did it outside that morning and it was a lil damp out and cold I cleaned the nipple and stuff and dried it real good hopefully it works and I did notice my bullet was off the pellets a lil so I pushed it down made sure it was in there snug hope its good now cause I been to this place twice killed 1 first time Sunday went back and had #2 that's when it misfired out of two times hunting this place I've seen deer twice and killed 1 so I'm praying it works this time

First of all you need periods in your post. Are you saying that your gun misfired and you only cleaned the nipple and stuff- then pushed down the bullet and hope it fires next time?? Good luck!!!!!!
