dipping in the stand??

I know this has prob been asked befor but i could not find it in the search. Whats yal thoughts on dipping in the stand, i have been doing it for the last 15 yrs never give much thought on it.. I have tried green apple just for the smell and have had deer walk up to the tree and smell around but dint seem to matter much. just wondering
 
I dip in the stand. Sometimes I carry a bottle. Sometimes I don't. Haven't had it cost me a deer yet.

It's a bad idea. Dipping in general is a bad idea. There's much less painful ways to do yourself in than that.

I agree it's bad for you.
 
I carry a bottle.I think deer are bound to associate the strong smell of dip with a human when the smell of dip and human scent are always together anywhere we go.I used to spit on the ground all the time and have does and little bucks at the foot of the tree.Some spooked and some didn't.But I never seen a mature buck while doing so.Think about when your twenty foot up a tree and your scent is blowing over a deers head"provided the thermals are good",and the smell of wintergreen at the base of the tree blowing right in the deer's nose.Maybe I'm giving the deer too much credit,but with all the time and money invested,I don't want to risk it.jmo
 
Another reason I successfully quit dipping last October. As sensitive as a deers nose is, you can't convince me that they can't smell it.

You don't know how many mature bucks it has cost you that you spooked out of sight

I've did it a lot and finally kicked it in the butt. And I have had young deer to actually step in the spit and never know it, but a mature deer I'd say it be a diff story.
 
Don't do it anymore, but when I used to chew I've had more than one deer come up to bottom of tree and actually smell of it. They were all young deer, I'm sure older deer avoid it like the plague.
 
Yea, definitely bad for you. That said, my cousin dips, and spits out of the stand. He says deer come up and lick it off the ground.
 
I dip in a stand. I know the deer can smell it. But I've killed a lot of deer. While dipping or after dipping including a mature 11 point at LBL while hunting on the ground came right in at 30 yards showed no signs it cared about the smell. Killed a really mature 8 last year in smoke pole season. Hunting over a field got with in 60 yards. Also never showed it cared about the smell.
 
I personally don't chew in the stand. In addition to the scent I think the sound/movement required when spitting is even worse.
 
i've spit dip and chew out of the stand. hard nasty habit to break. i have had deer also come under my stand and sniff around in it.
 
Dip, chew, pee, etc it all goes on the ground. I wish I had a particular episode of I believe it was Dream Season recorded to post from time to time. On this one hunt none of the hunters had even so much got their scent blocking crap out of the bags much less hunted in it. Guess what? They took animals. And when the fellow from the scent blocking crap company showed up oh boy was he fit to be tied. Let it hit the ground

I quit dipping for 3 years and started back last year during a rough day at work. I am trying to get my mindset right to quit again. My goal is to quit before bow season. It may not hurt most young deer but I had a mature buck get a lil nervous several years ago 10 minutes after I put a dip in. Either way I dont like doing it plus the main reason I want to quit is YOU CANT BLOW A FRIGGIN DUCK CALL WITH A DIP IN Lol. I'm sure Ill catch heat over this, I mean this is a deer hunting site.
