Different kind of oak tree

I was scouting some land today ,and while looking for a point near a major road , I saw several deer cross in the same spot , one being a nice buck .
I pulled the truck off the road and scouted my way into the timber . I jumped the deer ,so I headed across the road to see where they were feeding before they crossed the road .
I found an area near a gas line with several low growing , yet mature Oaks . I found a tree on the edge on the gas line loaded with acorns , with a type of leave I have never seen before .
I looked it up on the internet , and it's called a Blackjack Oak . A species of red oak with an 18 month growing cycle .
They aren't very common in the areas I hunt . This is the first one I have seen .

Across the road from my house is loaded with the blackjack oaks. In years past this was always the last acorns that were eaten. Dad always said they were bitter compared to the white and red oaks. I have seen deer eat them but most of the time it was years with little mast available.

Yeah , the only species producing right now are the red oaks .

Yep, only acorns I'm finding here. :)

The deer were wearing out the Blackjack acorns . Red oaks are producing some , but not near as many .

yep black jacks are among the trees I have found to be loaded this year... also have noticed in one area all the water oaks were loaded

Black Jack Oaks are very common in the midwest! I grew up in Missouri and we have alot of them there. I have yet to fird any in Tn.
