ML2 has the new style round receiver and an AccuTrigger. There are more bullet and sabot choices available with the .50 but .45 has the option of shooting sabotless.

And a .45 will have to be built with a Savage/Remington action and an aftermarket barrel or on a 45-70 conversion gun (H&R, Encore, CVA, etc.) while a .50 cal Savage ML can be bought off the shelf.
 
The ml1 also can be changed to a CF very easily which requires to have to go thru FFL....Also hard to find at reasonable price.
45 conversion prolly a much better option in the long run..
I love my Savage ML2 tho, however its not the first one I pull out of the safe when I go hunting.
