About this time of year this site normally starts filling up with posts from the squirrel hunters. Guess I'm a little early. The hot days of summer mean the squirrel opener is close. Looking forward to those cooler September mornings in the woods.
 
Just wondering how many early squirrel hunters find kill squirrels with wolves (spelling?) in their necks...like rabbits have. I'm not a big fan of heat hunting but after a good rain about 4PM is a great time to be in the woods.
 
I thought I was the only one tweaking the 22's and noticing the progress of the hickory nuts (just about king marble size now). Still a ways off, but I'm looking forward to it. I have yet to kill one with the wolves, but I've heard just cut them out and the meat will be fine.
 
Yea, hate those wolves. Don't see many the last few years. I agree with be ratio mentioned earlier, about 1 in 25 squirrels affected from what I've seen in the past few years.
 
This is the first year in a long time i just dont really have a place to go hunt those Tree rats. The farm i leased to deer hunt it about 98% bean fields with a thicket at one end and few trees on the creek line. Maybe something will popup because i sure love hunting those things

The squirrel opener is the first of 6 months of hunting opportunity. Look forward to seeing late August come around every year.
Took a walk through one of my squirrel woods and noticed the walnuts are putting on a good crop. Seems like after the squirrels get finished cutting the hickory nuts, they start on the acorns and walnuts. A few mature walnuts seems to keep attracting squirrels and hold them in an area all winter.

Doing most my squirrel hunting a little farther north than most of you, if that makes a difference with wolves or not, I don't know, but I'm seeing no more than about 1 in 50.

No nearby public land?
Most public land has decent to good squirrel hunting, and is typically not heavily hunted (for squirrels).

I think he's "on the road" doing some political fund raising for the Clinton Foundation, working with the Clinton Campaign, etc., and just doesn't have time to be on TNdeer.com until after November. Doubt he even gets to squirrel hunt this year.

I found some hickory trees this past weekend here in southwest TN that they are starting to cut.

Looks like theyve been were'n the hickory trees out, really gets you in the mood when ya see that kind of action.
 
Went to the range and got the XT22 dialed back in. Still haven't found anything that holds a tighter group than the Rem Golden Bullets, Don't fix it if it ain't broke applies again this year.

I'm ready for it. Last year sucked around here. Not the first acorn or hickory nut at prentis cooper. Have not been up to scout this year but hickory tree in my yard is loaded so I'm hoping that's a good sign
