Did he Survive?

A neighbors kid shot this buck on kids weekend. This pic is a week later. We were hoping to see him throughout the season but never did. Didn't hear of him being taken either. Think he will survive??

Gut shot is just about zero survival. Might take hours might take days but he won't survive the inevitable infection. Gut bacteria in the bloodstream is a death sentence.

I guess he wanted to take one with a bow. It was a heavy quartering shot and doesn't look like real good penetration. Maybe I'll find the remains this spring.

No not good penetration at all. Hate it bow hunting will humble a person.

I had no pictures of the deer in above post. Killed him again 368 days later.

I had a saying while bow hunting. You can't just shoot them, you're gonna have to kill him. Deer are amazing survivors. Even this buck was walking around after a week with an arrow sticking out of his side. Think about us doing that!

But, in the end, germs and infection set it and likely the bucks stomach was involved. Unable to digest food or eliminate properly he was likely eaten by coyotes once he laid down and couldn't get up.

I've personally witnessed coyotes chasing a buck within a couple hours of being gut shot. They pickup that scent quick.

Sorry, he's dead and probably suffered a slow horrible death while being eaten alive. That's nature.

Deer are more likely to survive a poor gun shot a week after versus and open wound from an arrow that's still in them because at least they have a closed wound with a bullet that has a chance to heal. That arrow ain't coming out.

Reason I'm saying so... If a viscous was perforated, he would have already died within a week of the shot from sepsis. That pic being taken a week later with a nice shiny coat means he is still grooming himself. A dying deer doesn't do that. His eyes look bright and healthy as well. Too soon after the shot to look for weight loss, but he looks to be in good condition prior to the mishap.

Now don't get me wrong... I just don't see HOW gut wasn't lacerated with the shot. But based on the cam pic, I really don't think it was, as again, he'd already be dead.

Have to agree with this. He is dead somewhere. If you get out looking for sheds, you might find his skull.

I'd guess that is it exactly. Many states require minimum 40lb draw weight to be legal. Not sure about TN if it's a requirement or not. Bow hunting is tough. I hate the thought of a kid having to experience one of worst feelings so early. How old is he/she?

I've taken that very shot before and all have been deadly. Small diameter arrows and fixed Muzzys and 60lb bow will do the trick.
That buck will survive if it can get that arrow out.
