Depredation permits

There is a 30 acre field behind my house that is leased to a truck farmer that I know. He has a depredation permit for deer and has told me the number of deer he's shot in his fields over the summer months when he has crops in the fields and it's pretty amazing. Today, the guy I hire to mow my yard told me he saw a deer laying in the small strip of woods separating my land and the rented field. Showed me a pic on his phone. I don't begrudge the farmer for killing deer eating his crops but this deer is maybe 40 yards from my back door and I know after a few more days, it's gonna be stinkin' to high heaven. I doubt that he shot it where it lays, more likely it crippled off but it's still gonna stink especially on a west wind.

That's interesting that he could get one for 30 acres. I tried to get one and was denied. We have minor damage from the deer but major damage from all the road hunting.

While stationed in Germany in the 80's I learned about their hunting and fishing laws. I lived in a small village I participated in a hunt conducted by The local Jager Meister as a driver. {Hunt Master, Game Warden } Hunters were selected and put on stands in carefully selected locations. Residents were selected to be drivers women, children,and non selected hunters were placed in carefully selected places. We were given directions on the route we were to travel and make noise to drive the game of ahead of us. We directed as we hiked through the woods to slow down or speed up . There was Hoot'n,Hollar'n,whistling, Pot and pan beating. You could hear the shooting a head of us. Some shotguns for small game,rifles for deer.It was a Very well orchestrated hunt.Everyone gathered to clean and process the game. The Deer Hunters got their Trophies ,Head,Hide,and Hooves. Meat was shared in different ways. Widows, the elderly,disabled ,and needy were given meat. A lot meat was cooked . We all got together in a park and chowed down that evening. Very amazing event that blew my mind.The Hunters were encouraged or told to take out certain deer that were injured or older.There were goals and quota's. Kind of like our Hunting clubs and leases have. This was a management event ,For Population control. The Farmers had less crop damage. There were less accidents on the roads. With Draw hunts and a point system in place Tn could try something similar . As our population grows and becomes more dense we need to start thinking differently and out of the box.
There were not piles of dead deer going to waste rotting in the fields and peoples back yards, There was not anywhere near the amount of road kill we see in West Tn. now days.

Buzzards have found the deer. This morning, I stepped out on the back porch and a couple of buzzards flew up in the trees. I kept watching and a couple of heads popped up from the weeds...turkeys! Now, I don't think the turkeys were pecking on the carcass but I do find it amazing that the turkeys would commingle with the buzzards. The turkeys fed around a bit and came on out in the yard.

It wouldn't surprise me if the turkeys were in fact pecking at the carcass. Not saying they were, just saying it wouldn't surprise me. They are just basically giant chickens and chickens are kinda like hogs, they'll eat about anything.

If Hunters for the Hungry could be ramped up this can happen. The processor here in Clarksville, Hunters Harvest, had a bunch donated last time I went there, if we could get some funding from some of these pantries, we could supply plenty of protein for them.

Would love to see it. We're finally back to a population where we're going to have to start thinning does. But the 4-6 bucks we kill each year are more than enough venison for our family. Would love to be able to donate does to somebody that could use them.

Most people don't seem to handle change well. So many things things were different there , A test was required to get your license.You had to know anatomy for shot placement , show proficiency, for each weapon you used. I had a roommate that went through the process so he could bow hunt.

Same type thing for fishing. You couldn't put fish on a stringer. Had to use a basket or hit them in the head with a little bat . The test required that you know where the Brain was located to hit the fish in the correct spot. Sure makes you think about things that we take for granted.

I actually fully support Germany's hunter tests. I love the idea of hunters being required to understand the basics of herd dynamics and biology. That turns hunters from consumers to managers - which is their proper role.

I really think depredation permits has had a tremendous negative impact on the herd especially in Fayette and Hardeman counties. I don't know about other counties but I do these 2. Along with farmers removing all the cover on a farm and 3+ months of gun season in the past doesn't help. But farmers have wore the herd out here.

I wish the farmers would let hunters have a crack at these deer instead of just leaving them to rot. They have no problem taking giant taxpayer paid subsidies but when it comes to said taxpayers wanting to kill a few deer they almost never give permission.

Like putting a dead animal's face near their crotch, holding ducks that are crippled and not yet fully dispatched, shotgunning beer from a fish, turkeys in the seatbelt of their car with some stupid caption like, "he's tired and wanted a nap", and worse.

It's like we provide the highlight reel for anti hunters to get their agendas more steam. I think it should be more difficult to obtain the hunter certification here like Germany does. It would weed out some of the people that we'd honestly rather not have representing us as hunters and anglers.

There was this farmer near my BIL and SIL 's house when was complaining about the deer getting in his watermelons. BIL asked if I could get permission to hunt and told him I'd kill up to whatever was legal . He said he had the depredation permits to kill alot of deer and for me to come on out . Well ....his terms was 1. Can't keep the deer .2. Shoot them with a .22 so they will go off and die not here hopefully . 3. Hunting at night with a spotlight . I told him I wasn't used to hunting illegal ! He said it was perfectly legal . I said I appreciate it but no thanks .

We used to host public hunts and were going to again but TWRA can't sign hold harmless agreements that was required by our insurance. That same year was when we started getting terrorized by road hunters at night. Doesn't look like the public knows how to act anymore. Hunting sure has changed.

I've heard out of the farmers mouth to gut shoot them so they'll run out of the field. Same guy told me he killed 9 out of one stand. 7 of the 9 in one evening. Then asked me to be on the permit with him. I said no thanks!

Maybe make it that we can only kill does. If they want the population lowered, that's the way to do it.

You kill the deer viva the depredation permits and not quota permits so it shouldn't count towards state allowances ....I would think . You can't keep the deer so how would they know .

There is no depredation hunting during deer season...only in the off season.

They make fences to keep deer out, It's pretty simple really. Somebody spend the $$ deer lives matter more to some folks.

There is no depredation hunting during deer season...only in the off season.

I was replying to someone that said they should do away with the permits and just allow hunting.

Quit farming where the deer are. Problem solved. Seriously though it makes me sick knowing they shoot them and leave them laying. Had a great uncle years ago that would shoot a bunch in his bean fields all while we were hunting the land. I always wanted to choke him out.
