We've bulldozed around 6 acres on one of my farms, clearing out underbrush for additional pasture for cattle in the future, but the land is ripe for the planting this year for a large foodplot. I seem to remember you had a recipe for a seed mix that seemed head and shoulders above others.

Would you please repost your 'secret recipe'.

Also, in the spring, parts will be oversewn with fescue for the cattle, parts will remain as a dedicated wildlife plot. Cattle will be off this portion of the farm until February.

Anything i recommend will come back full throttle in the spring. BUT,.. since it is cattle and not horses you will just have them cows some great spring grazing. You will not be able to sow in fescue though.. the clover may be to thick in early spring. You may have to wait til end of may when the mix dies out to successfuly overseed the fescue. Depending on how many cows you gonna put in there also.

15 lbs crimson clover
5 lbs arrowleaf clover
5 lbs DER
50 lbs winter wheat/oats/grain rye
PER ACRE
In your case ,.. the rye would be better. One because of the lower ph with fresh ground,.. and two because the cows coming in.
If you know the areas that will be for wildlife only, go with this
10 lbs red clover
10 lbs arrowleaf clover
1 lb chicory
50 lbs winter wheat seed
That will last from september planting til the next september planting with only 1 or maybe 2 bush hoggings in the early or mid summer. It will also tolerate the lower ph til you get some lime and fertilizer going on her in the future.

If you wanted to go ahead and mix the fescue in with the first recommendation you can,.. but keep the lbs lower. You could always do this...
15 lbs crimson
3 lbs ladino white clover
5 lbs DER
25 lbs rye
15 lbs fescue

Notice the ladino clover in there,.. not only would it benefit the deer shortly,. but makes for great cattle pasture. Great cattle pasture includes fescue,bluegrass,clovers, and ryes. In which,. will suport the deer also.

THANKS!!! That's perfect info. Part of the land will be sown in the fescue mix, the rest in the 'wildlife plot' mix. Hopefully I'll have some good pictures to post coming up!

Queation

Wasn't Pennington doing some testing with Fescues that were more wildlife compatable (Deer would eat it) a couple years ago?

Just a thought that if they did might be able to take of 2 for 1.
