Hey Everyone. I am thinking about getting some last minute deer hunting in this weekend but I also have a beginner who wants to squirrel hunt with me. Do the rules allow me to carry a centerfire for deer and her to carry a 22 or shotgun for squirrel/rabbits and us hunt together? I know some states get real picky about that sort of thing because they don't want the risk of anyone shooting the wrong animal with the wrong gun so I wondered if anyone here had any experience.

Thanks.

I think that I know the answer, but I don't want to say something wrong. To get the right answer to this question put it in the TWRA QUESTIONS topics. scn will give you the straight stuff.

Small game season is open, and there is no problem with them being with you. Although not required for a small game hunter, I would highly suggest that they be wearing the blaze orange for safety reasons while out there with you.

I thought so but I wanted to make sure that nothing we were doing would be against any rules-that's the last thing I want.
One last question. Should she have a WMA non-quota big game permit since she is with me while I do it or if she is only hunting small game will that matter?

Thanks so much for your help @scn

She is not required to have the Type 94 permit if she is not hunting big game.

Check the regulations for the WMA that you intend to hunt and make sure that the small game season is open. It is on the majority of the nonquota WMAs, but, there have been a couple over the years that have closed the small game season during the deer season or ended it before the regular closing for small game.
