Just out of curiosity... I've seen several scrapes in the time I've been hunting but I've never messed with them much. The other day I worked one with a bit of scent and made another mock scrape not far from it. The morning after I killed a nice sized buck and while gutting it another buck came within about 30 yards of me (literally 10 minutes after I shot) and was heading for it too. Since then... I have been adding scent to the scrape every few days and deer are still coming to it daily. I went to check it this evening and freshen it up before hunting in the morning and I found something that myself personally, have never seen - TONS of white deer hair in one of the scrapes. There have been 3 new scrapes made since I started tinkering with them right next to one another.

With the wind blowing today leaves covered a few of the scrapes but 2 of them were clearly worked today - long story short, I've done some research online but I can't come up with anything so I came here to ask. What would cause this and has anyone else witnessed this? They were clumps of hair not just individual pieces where they might have fell off - imagine you pinched a deers belly and jerked a ball of hair out and that's what it was like but there were 8-10 different clumps in the scrape. They weren't packed into the dirt either so I can't imagine it coming from a deer rolling in it or anything else. I also assume deer like most animals aren't shedding clumps of hair at this time of year.... any ideas?
 
Definitely not from the deer I gutted - I gutted it about 15-20 yards away from this particular scrape with the hair in it. Also no one else allowed to hunt and I'd hear a gunshot if someone did - it's roughly 300 yards from my bedroom window. I didn't find any hair around the scrape just inside of it. I should have took a picture - plan on going in the morning and if the wind/rain don't blow it away I'll try to get one then - it's a lot of hair.
 
Maybe if I'm lucky tomorrow morning whatever did it will come back and do it again - it was just odd. I read online about people trimming hairs off of tarsal glands and putting them in scrapes to keep the scent there for a week or so. Maybe a deer was scratching his belly and knocked a bunch off??? I'm not sure how likely that would be but it's all I can think of
 
Bet it was a coyote's doing. Coyote will play around with scrapes. It most likely found some hair from your kill or possibly another dead deer in the area.

Originally Tinks Power Scrape that came with 2 drippers that worked horribly might I add lol They have caps to cover the nozzle so the scent doesn't come out in your pocket while carrying it I reckon but the hole without the cap is way too big. I drilled a small hole in the cap and got more of what I was going for after that. I plan to purchase a few drippers from wildlife research this coming up year which have much better reviews. I also pee in one of them every couple days - the one with the hair was the last one I peed in. I'll typically pee in one late in the evening and see deer the morning after
 
Was the hair only in the scrape or in and around? Could possibly be from two bucks fighting in my opinion when I find a place where bucks have been fighting a lot of the times there is hair on the ground.
 
I didn't notice hair outside of the scrape but it's also a lot easier to spot hair in fresh dirt versus in the leaves around it so it's possible. I just didn't know if this was something typical that people seen regularly or not. That could be though because I know a few different bucks have been visiting them. I can't wait until the morning! Hope one of them bad boys comes sneaking up in there after these storms move out :D
 
Could have been a couple of bucks sparring over your scrape but typically, that wouldn't produce white hairs. May have been a deer standing over it and using his hind foot to scratch his belly. That sounds more plausible. I still have scrapes being worked almost daily and use my own scent as well as estrous doe scent in them. You might want to consider this: I've see more deer hit a scrape location and never touch the scrape but always work the overhanging branch than I have seen them working the actual scrape. Many times you might think the bucks have abandoned a scrape because it's covered in leaves when in reality they're still hitting it. If you're going to use a scent you might want to check into one of the licking branch scents.
