243 with the right bullets.

7-08 lots of factory ammo, different range of bullet choices and rifles being chambered for it. the 120 NBT is an excellent deer bullet. it was beefed up for the silhouette comp shooters, factory ammo in that bullet too. any of the 140's will work. ballistics is about 150-300 fps less than 7mm mag factory ammo, depending on load. hornady lite mag ammo will add about 200 fps. BUT, 300 yards and less you wouldnt notice a difference between the two but the recoil.

260 great round, not a large choice in rifles being chambered or factory ammo. a tad bit slower than a 7-08, but more than makes up for it in BC and SD.

I've set up a deal this weekend. The gun store by my house is going to let us shoot several guns.

We are going to shoot .243 7mm08 .260

We found a Nice Howa .243 with advantage camo, barrel and stock it's a sharp gun. pistol grip, harris bipod, with a leupold on the top. Get it out the door for 650.

If reloading, I say .260. If wanting to use factory ammo, get a 7-08 or .243.

Yeh I did some price checks on ammo today.

Federal.. .243 42.99
Federal.. .7mm08 48.99
Federal.. .260 54.99

.243's are looking better to me.

geez, were you getting those prices??? maybe that much for noslers or premium ammo, but the beauty about the 260 or 08 is plain old cup and core bullets works wonderfully in them.

Ditto that!!!
243 federal powershocks $12.99 at wally world
243 remington core lokts $18.99 at wally world
243 winchester powerpoints $18.99 at wally world

I have been using 100 grain core lokts out of my 243 for 3 years now! never had a deer go more than 30 yards, most of them drop in their tracks!

Walmart has em that cheap? Found em at a gun shop by my house. He has the best prices on his guns. I'll check Wally out on the ammo prices.

Most of this discussion has been on the calibers. I found the 260 and the 7-08 very similar ballistically in deer-weight bullets (140 gr) but I went with the 260 so I can use 85 gr hollow points for coyotes in off-season.

The rifle is a Ruger Compact M77. LOVE it! It has a 16.5" barrel, great for manuvering in a tree stand, and very light. The short barrel only took about 150 fps off the speed; still plenty flat shooting for 200 yards and beyond. It should fit your wife perfectly. After practice I could shoot it fine, too, but I also added a slip-on recoil pad for a quick extra inch of pull length. (I'm 6'1".)

Shoots great, less weight!

Notice the two empty shells in the shell holder.

I see, the more you kill, the lighter it gets....got it! LOL!

Nice rifle Shane. That will be a hand down to some lucky kid one day.

You can also order almost any kind of rifle from Wally!! I live in memphis and they said that I could pick up a mossberg atr 100 for my kid for around $290 not a bad price for a .243 or .308.

if im wanting to buy a new rifle should i go .243 or .308? Experienced hunters input would be greatly appreciated. thanks

It all depends on what you want out of a rifle. If you are hunting deer size game and under then yes .243,.260, 7mm-08,.308 would be perfect, but if you want to hunt deer and elk then you might want to stay away from the .243. If you just want a good all around rifle them .270, 270wsm, 7mag, 7wsm,.308, 30-06 and so on.

The 243 and the 308 use the same brass. The 243 is necked down to accomodate the smaller bullet. The 243 will shoot 55 grain bullets to 110 grain bullets. The 308 will shoot much heavier bullets.

I have both and use them for basically the same situations. I hunt varmints, deer, and hogs with my 243. Basically the same with my 308. The 308 does have more recoil than the 243, but I can shoot either rifle just as good as the other. I wouldn't feel under gunned in the least with a 243 hunting any big game in TN. But, I do find myself hunting with my 308 more than any other caliber rifle I own.
