Deer hunting stories

You would think that you have heard just about anything from some deer hunters but I heard two stories recently that shocked me.

1. Hunter: My son killed a nice 8 pointer last week.

Me: Do you have a picture or the antlers? I would like to see him.

Hunter: No. Both antlers of the deer were broken off.

Me: Oh. I guess he had seen him before he broke his antlers off.

Hunter: No. He just looked like he should be an 8 pointer.

2. Hunter: (same hunter) My son shot a 150 class buck last week.

Me: Wow. You don't see many that big do you.

Hunter: Nope. The only thing is that after he shot the deer, he didn't go to where he fell to check on him. He went back to the truck to come and get me to help get the deer out. When we got back to where he had shot the deer, he was gone and we never did find him.

I've shot a lot of bucks that looked a lot bigger in the scope than in person, but never had to imagine what I thought one was. If I did it would be bigger than an 8 point , I guarantee you that.

#2 is a normal deer story. The ones I have shot and never found... they grow as the story is re-told over the years. :)

The vast majority of my bucks shrink. I shot one huge 10 point in 2010. He was running. When I found the critter a few minutes later I was about to think I had accidentally shot a doe his rack had shrunk so bad. He had somehow transformed into a 10 1/2" spread 5 point. I swear he was huge when he ran by me in the low light. :)

The 8 point I shot this past year is the only buck who has grown after pulling the trigger.

Well, there WAS that one that I shot at and missed right during the last minutes of shooting light on the last evening of the season in 2004........he made a Bull Elk look like a chipmunk........ :)

My buddie told me last year that he shot this doe on accident.He said "the doe and 10 pt was facing each other nose to nose like they were kissing, I put the crosshair's on the buck's shoulder, my gun must have been way off because I hit the doe right in the neck" I said man you don't have to make up an excuse on why you shot a doe. This guy has the most unbelievable deer stories you'll ever hear in you life.
I swear he must be seeing stuiff or a compulsive liar. He also see's bucks fighting everday when he goes hunting in the rut.
He also seen them walking on their hind legs balancing on a fence to pick blackberries, I'm like man he must of just not liked the ones that were a foot off the ground.

I will never understand why people lie about hunting so much.

One day I was driving home and saw a guy parked at a store with a 24" wide 8 point. I stopped and talked to him. He was excited because it was his best and he was probably in his 60's. I congratulated him and went home. I checked my Facebook and seen a kid I went to school with posted something like.. "killed huge 8 gonna post a pic in a minute" Sure enough he posts a picture with the same 8 I saw, in the same truck, and at the same store. I called him out and a few other guys also saw it and joined in.


Another kid accidentally killed three deer in one shot with his crossbow.

I like the guys who hunt in the same general area that you do who always claim to have seen every buck you shoot many times before and passed on them. In their minds they know every move every single deer in the area makes and they recognize every individual buck instantly. Smart fellas for sure. :)

Even with bow fishing.
Especially when there is money involved.

No matter how honest you are, and how well you obey the law, there are always those who question your success. And abilities.

This is exactly why I am so hesitant to post my or my kids success pics of bow fishing and hunting.

Sure we post a few, but if we post very much the finger pointers come out of the wood work.

So this "story telling" stuff is kind of a double edged sword.

If someone asks how many I killed last season, and I say 14 by bow, 2 by muzzle loader, I immediately get skepticism.

Why would anyone want to kill that many?
How could you legally kill that many?
You must have left some laying in the woods?
ETC!

It goes on and on!

And kill a monster buck. WOW!
The crap REALLY hits the fan then.

And kill several monster bucks...or tell a whopper of a story that IS TRUE!!! Forget it...the liars have already made it impossible to be credible.
You are a POACHER...a trespasser, a violator.

So, my family and friends know. And in the end, that is all that matters.

Liars lie, cheaters cheat, haters HATE!!!

Better to just keep quiet!

Yea those are the best. Had one of my buddies and he would text me about every hour it seemed like, He said "you got one headed your way" I thought well crap he is bound to be right at least a few times. Then when I wouldn't see it, he says "must of went the other way". It was a win-win for him. Then when I killed one he said he let it walk. :crazy:

I know exactly what you mean. I never have killed much, but I have some big deer on trail camera. I've had a few guys call me a lier and say the pics weren't mine.



Which reminds me, anyone else know the deer expert that simply isn't a deer expert? I've had one on camera for three years (starting with his 2.5 summer pics) Last year I showed it to a guy that does kill big bucks, but he made every negative comment he could. "That deer can't be but about 2.5" "he'll lose a good inch of mass when the velvet sheds" "he'll be a good one next year"

That buck was 4.5 and 135-140

I showed him my 3.5 150+ "dang, that one must be 6.5 years old!"

Bingo catman! Some people are sore losers and they get mad because they didn't kill as many deer as you and that is like beating them in a game of cards,'YOU CHEATED'they say! I like hearing about peoples success. There are always going to be a select few jack A$$'s that want to ruin everyones fun. Don't let em stop you from giving reports.

Truth is, it gets old after a while. I just get tired of hearing the negativity and for WHAT??? So I can thump my chest or try to share with others some of my experiences?

Sharing and bragging are two different things. Both are a part of hunting. Biggest thing to learn is to ignore the "haters"
