My wife loves to watch deer and we put out a bag or two of corn every few days so she can watch them during the summer months. Is there any other type of feed they might like better or would benefit them more than corn? Bags of soybeans? Would like to find something different for them at our local co op.
Thank you

If this is just for watching from your house, is a salt lick feasible? Also, if just for attracting and watching purposes, peanut butter or C'mere deer just to get them in there may work

It is for watching them from our back porch. Salt lick has been there for years but haven't seen them touch it. They love the corn, just looking for new ideas to keep them interested and to help with nutrition.

If you just want to keep them interested you can mix in some molasses with the corn and throw it out and pour some on an old stump, you can also just mix some C'mere deer with the corn also. Here is a recipe for a homemade mineral lick that has worked for me.

1 part Di-calcium phosphate, this is a dairy feed additive bought at feed stores.
Comes in 50lb Bags at around $11.00 you need one bag.

2 parts Trace mineral salt, the red and loos kind without the medications.
Comes in 50lb Bags at around $5.00 you need two bags.

1 part Stock salt, ice cream salt.
Comes in 50lb Bags at around $2.00 you need one bag.

Directions:

-Use a 3 pound or similar size coffee can to use as your measure for each part of the mix.

-Mix all together well but not until read to use, keep ingredients separate until ready to put to use.

-Dig or tear up a circle in the soil about 36 inches wide and about 6 inches deep.

-Mix your mineral mixture with the soil.

Maintenance:

-Replenish in 6 months with fresh supply of mineral, and then each year there after.

If your looking for a good nutrition boost for your deer. Try real world minerials. They have a ton of vitamins and minerals to help keep your deer healthy. For the cost of feeding them it might be easier to make yourself a small food plot. Corn does have some protein in it but it's very low. Planting a clover plot gives the deer 34 percent protein and will feed your deer for about 7 or 8 months depending on how cold it gets. Plus will make the bucks you watch and your deer in general bigger. I have a group I started a few years ago to help people grow bigger healthier deer. Weather you hunt or deer watch.
