I never knew this and just thought some might find it interesting.

So I was watching a discovery channel show and they were talking about the whitetail deer. Well of course after giving birth does lick their fawns to get rid of the smell they have so it doesn't attract predators.

What I didn't know is that if the doe sees a coyote or predator she will leave the fawn and limp away from it, going in the opposite direction. She limps so the predator thinks she is hurt, thus drawing attention away from the fawn, and most of the time the coyotes leaving hungry. Just thought it was cool, figured I would share.
 
Most mothers (including human ones) will exhibit similar behavior to protect their young. We often see this type behavior with birds.

In fact, I saw two separate hen turkeys a couple weeks ago, acting like they were injured, both letting me get with 10 yards of them, neither running off or flying, but rather just enticing me to pursue them (away from their young). Both those turkey episodes happened on the same day, less than a half hour apart, but nearly 2 miles apart.

MattR...."WHY" comes into play here :D . I have seen this with deer, turkeys, cats, and other birds. I have seen deer and turkeys actually run towards you so close that you want to chase it lol.

MattR, I look forward to your experience on all issues dealing with deer. You seem to have a pretty vast knowledge and open mind on all aspects. Dont like the people that condemn, but love hearing other viewpoints. Like you have said as well, I too am not an expert by any means, but feel i have a good knowledge on deer. Always wanting to learn more. Welcome, my friend!
 
Thanks a lot JC. I've checked out this site some last year but kind of stayed away from it during deer season. Now, I have realized what I was missing. Not only was I missing the knowledge that is gained from many seasoned deer hunters but a lot of times it's just about sharing your experience with other people that have the same passion as you do. It's pretty darn cool. :)
 
Instinctive defense mechanisms many species have are truly amazing.

I learned just how programmed does are to respond to fawns in trouble while working with BGG on his thermal imaging research. If we saw several deer--even hundreds of yards away--with their heads down in soybeans feeding, all he had to do to ascertain which were does and which were bucks was blow a fawn distress call. Instantly every doe in the field would jerk her head up and look at us. Some would even instinctively run towards us.

A couple of days ago, my parents--who live in the country--had a tiny, starved kitten show up at their door. The kitten would run from door to door crying loudly. The kitten's cry just happens to be right at the pitch of a fawn distress call. Several times, when the kitten cried very loudly, does came bounding out of the woods and running through the yard in response to the kitten's cry. In fact, the same does were fooled multiple times over a couple of day period.

[and on a side note, I'm such a softy/sucker, I now have a new kitten :cry: ]
 
Haha, deer fake limping which is cool, but see with the kittens, they "fake" being starved and pitiful so they fool people in to taking them home with them. His plan worked perfect didn't it! :grin:

Yeah, we are keeping the two separated for now. Although he's not quite as mean as he looks. ...well, unless you're small enough for him to swallow.
