Went shed hunting today and something caught my eye. First I thought it was funny looking horning until I finally walked closer to look. I've never seen this before and didn't notice it a week or so ago when I was walking there. You can see the teeth marks and where bark has been stripped off.

Does look like horse damage, but would guess if the deer had no food or if the snow got deep there, that deer would eat tree bark. Up north, that is a regular part of a deer's diet in the winter.
 
Poor fellas. I've heard of deer eating tree bark in harsh northern winters, but never seen it. Sure looks like it. Looks a lot like beaver but that's way up for that.

Each of the small trees have the same gnawing characteristics. Hard to see in the pictures, but also "smaller" gnawls. I would be inclined to suspect squirrels. Also looks as if the trees are all the same species.
 
I dont know, after looking closer at the pictures, two of the trees you can see the bark was peeled off in places too.. odd
Are those ash saplings?
