Deer decoy during the rut

Anybody ever use a deer decoy and have any luck? I got a one of those full size deer target that I got a few years ago but have yet to shot at it. I still ain't ever put the rack into it yet. So what all do you think, should I take it out there and use it or leave it in the shed. And if I do o should take it out should I put the antlers on it or don't?
 
Go for it. Take it out and leave the antlers at home. Spray it down good with scent killer before you take it and cover its backside with tinks 69 or code blue when you get it setup. I'd set it up in a visible area on a field edge or something like that. I was thinking about doing the same thing myself. Good luck! Let us know how it works!

I use a decoy every year in our open fields when I am bowhunting. A little rattling does the trick at times. I always use mine with horns...
 
At the very least it will get their attention.....for archery that allows you to shoot, for rifle, it draws them in closer out of curiousity. I use the blow up version as I walk a ways back in. I will be using it in KY this weekend, just make sure you have orange on it when you travel in and out of the woods.
 
I have 3 3D targets in my back yard. Every year (and sometimes daily) I have to go out there and put their heads back on them or even put them back together. The deer hit them at night. I also use a deke while hunting. It's no good for does. They almost always shy away from it. I do draw in bucks. On several occasions I'd had the bucks come sidling in with hair bristled and eyes rolled back but I still haven't had one tear into it. So far I've never had a mature, big buck come in. I almost always use mine as a buck and place him quartering to me. A buck coming in on a buck decoy will come in head to head. They'll come in head to tail on a doe deke. Place it to where they'll present you with a broadside shot.

Yeah, used the Primos "scarface" decoy in ILL a couple years and had lots of attn. from young bucks 2.5 and under, but never had a mature buck even pay attn. to it. I used a small 8 pt rack on it. Does will actually shy away from it in most cases.
 
The only time I'd use a doe deke was if the rut was for sure happening. Otherwise you're going to have better results using it as a buck... and don't use antlers so big that they will scare away all the other bucks.
 
Mike I believe we are there on the farm I'm hunting this weekend...I've had bucks pushing does for 2 weeks...mature bucks at that!

I think during the rut if its a big buck your after then a buck decoy is your best bet. Small bucks may have allready gotten their arse kicked by a bigger buck and does are running away from big bucks by this point so a buck decoy is your best option for big bucks. If you want a meat buck or a doe then put out a doe decoy.

I generally like to put them out in the middle of a draw or field so the deer will have time to see it and react to it. Not be startled by it. Give them time to size it up and ease in on it. In my early days of using decoys I tried setting up in the woods and found that deer came up on them and got startled quickly. Likewise if I set them up right on top of where I expected deer to come out then they would dart before they would come in on them.

What others have said clean them good at home. Take care in transportation not to let them get mixed with truck odors such as gasoline. Wrap in a clean tarp or something. Handle with gloves. I generally do not spray mine. I want it to be as natural as possible I usually leave it out a day or two ahead of time off to the side in the bushes to get use to the environment. I will usually tie on a piece of TP to its ears and a piece of Paper Towel to its tail so the wind will catch it and give the deer some movement. A little twitch here and a little twitch there goes a long way in attracting them I have found. Deer seldom stay 100% stationary like a decoy does so its good to have some movement on them.
