Deer and Cows

New farm i hunt has cows, is it pointless to put out a mineral block? I know the cows will tear it up but will the deer still use it if its touched by cows or are they gonna be picky?

I've seen deer licking salt blocks in horse fields.

A good way to keep cows from tearing up a salt block is to get the kind with a hole in the middle.Run a rope thru the hole and tie it up in a tree. The deer will raise up on thier hind legs to lick it.The rain will also slowly dissolve the block and create a lick under the block.

Just put a block out, and fence off say a 20ft diameter around it thats about 3 or 4 feet high. Make sure it is fine with the landowner, of course. Deer will use it while cattle cant. It doesnt have to be any type of permanent fence. Rope would probably work fine, as opposed to barbwire

I don't have much luck with deer and cattle sharing a salt lick. I always put them in the edge of a hay or crop field.

You ain't kidding. Darn neighbor's bull tore up my fence, pushed through onto our property, and the rest of the herd followed. They absolutely destroyed a 3 yr old lick on my place, crapping everywhere in it.

At least I got a little sweet revenge... the bull bred some of our registered angus, forcing us to abort them recently. Neighbor had to pay the damages, and even better, couldn't even get his crazy ass bull up. They tried to dart him twice on our property, continued to destroy fences at their expense, then they finally gave up and shot him with a rifle and hauled him off. At least that sumbitch won't ever be back

I did some plots this fall for a guy who has a 200 something acre farm and he told me he had a couple of cows now, and asked if he should fence the plots off. He didnt want to, and about a month ago I checked on them and those couple of cows turned into about 15 and they had destroyed all of his plots!! What a waste of money on his part!! Live and learn I guess, lol

Cows will absolutely destroy the woods if they are allowed to forage in them. As far as acorns go, cows will eat them up like popcorn. In fact, many cows die from acorn poisoning because they eat to many of them.
