Climbed a tree around 2:30 yesterday afternoon in a thicket where I've been seeing bucks cross a field in the evenings. I was within 10 yards of a well used trail that the deer use in the evenings to go out to feed. Hunted this tree twice this year with no luck so far. This spot seems to only produce deer sightings when there is a south wind, and that's what I had. Around 4:45 I had seen nothing, broke out the grunt call and hit it a few times, then rattled for maybe 15-20 seconds. I've never had much luck with this but thought i'd give it a shot and see what happened. I think it's a little early still but you never know. After about a minute of waiting I see a deer pop out 80 yards away. I see it's just a doe, but she heads straight to my tree and ends up 8 yards away. My first thought was not to shoot her so I waited. She stood under me looking all over the place, trying to find the bucks she heard. After about 2 minutes, she heads over to the trail to leave. I decided I better take advantage of this situation and get some more meat in the freezer so I can focus on a buck during the rut. I stop her at 20 yards and put a good shot on her. She ran about 40 yards and that was it. Excellent blood trail from the rage.
